Adani Defence & Aerospace
UAVs, missiles, ammunition, small arms, counter-drone systems and aircraft MRO.
Adani Defence & Aerospace is the defence arm of the Adani group, built over less than a decade through acquisitions, Israeli joint ventures and greenfield plants rather than through a slow organic climb. It sits under Adani Enterprises, the listed flagship, and is run as a vertical rather than as a separately quoted company. The scale of the capital behind it is what makes it unusual in Indian private defence, where most entrants have grown from component supply.
Six lines make up the business. Unmanned systems are the most visible. The Adani Aerospace Park at Hyderabad, opened with Elbit Systems, was the first private UAV manufacturing complex in India and the first plant outside Israel to build the Hermes 900, which enters Indian service as the Drishti 10 Starliner. That aircraft flies for around thirty six hours with a payload measured in hundreds of kilograms, and the Navy took the first Indian-built example. Below it sits the Drishti 6 tactical UAV, derived from the Hermes 450 and being progressively Indianised, along with mini UAVs and the SkyStriker loitering munition ordered by the Indian Army. Missiles are the newer line, covering UAV-launched precision guided munitions, next generation anti-radiation missiles, and a fourth generation very short range air defence system developed with DRDO.
Ammunition runs from Kanpur, where the company describes its complex across more than five hundred acres as the largest in South Asia, producing small, medium and large calibre natures and winning an export order within months of starting. Small arms come out of Gwalior through PLR Systems, the joint venture with Israel Weapon Industries, which builds Tavor and X95 assault rifles, Galil sniper rifles, Negev light machine guns and Uzi submachine guns. Counter-drone work has produced a vehicle-mounted system with both soft-kill jamming and hard-kill laser effectors, trialled with DRDO for the Indian Army. The sixth line arrived by purchase: in December 2024 the group took a controlling stake in Air Works, India's largest private aircraft maintenance business, adding line maintenance, heavy checks, avionics and interior refurbishment across Hosur, Mumbai and Kochi. A Delhi research centre and carbon aerostructures and avionics work at Hyderabad support the rest. Manufacturing depth rather than assembly is the stated aim, and the export orders logged so far suggest the group intends to sell well beyond Indian requirements. What the group has not yet done is win a large platform programme of the kind that anchors a prime contractor. Its position rests instead on manufacturing capacity, licensed designs brought in through Israeli partners, and a willingness to fund plants ahead of the orders that would fill them. Whether that converts into the deeper design authority Indian procurement policy now rewards is the open question hanging over the business, and it is why the missile and counter-drone lines matter more than their present revenue suggests.
