Airbus Defence and Space

Airbus Defence and Space is the defense and space division of Airbus SE, formed in January 2014 when the European aerospace group folded three predecessor units, Airbus Military, the space specialist Astrium, and the defense electronics house Cassidian, into a single organization. It is now organized around three program lines that between them cover most of what a modern military needs in the air and in orbit, and it operates from a base in Taufkirchen, Germany, with roughly 36,000 employees spread across France, Germany, Spain, the UK, and beyond. Military Air Systems, sometimes called Air Power internally, is the most visible piece. It builds the A400M Atlas strategic airlifter, the A330 MRTT multi-role tanker used by air forces from Australia to Singapore, and the C295 and CN235 tactical transports that form the backbone of many mid-sized air forces' cargo fleets. Airbus also holds a share of the four-nation Eurofighter Typhoon program, manufacturing German, Spanish, and UK-bound aircraft sections, and it is one of the industrial partners, alongside Dassault and Indra, developing the Future Combat Air System intended to eventually replace the Typhoon and Rafale.

Connected Intelligence is the newer, less hardware-heavy line, organized around five business groups: intelligence, secure communications, cybersecurity, special security programs, and secure land communications. This is where Airbus sells the encrypted radios, secure networks, and cyber defense services that let militaries and government agencies move voice, data, and video without it being intercepted, plus intelligence and reconnaissance systems and mission-critical software for defense and civil customers alike. Space Systems covers both military and civil space work, and it is substantial. Airbus builds telecommunications, Earth observation, navigation, and scientific satellites, including contributions to Europe's Galileo navigation constellation, plus the ground segments and payloads that go with them. It builds the Ariane launch vehicle family and has supplied hardware to the International Space Station, including the Columbus laboratory module and the Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo ships.

Military-relevant space work includes secure satellite communications and reconnaissance satellites for European governments, alongside deep-space and planetary science missions like Rosetta, BepiColombo, and ExoMars that build the same engineering base. Airbus Defence and Space also carries missile-adjacent electronics and defense systems work inherited from Cassidian, and the division holds significant stakes in Europe's shared defense ventures, including MBDA, the continent's missile house. As a wholly owned subsidiary of publicly traded Airbus SE, the division itself has no separate stock listing, and it posted a net loss in 2024 even as its parent group's commercial aircraft business stayed profitable, a reminder that European defense spending growth has been real but uneven in translating to division-level earnings. In the U.S., Airbus's defense and helicopter business operates through Airbus U.S. Space & Defense, which holds real federal award history distinct from the European parent division.
