Allen-Vanguard is a counter improvised explosive device company that has turned into an electronic warfare company. It was formed in Ottawa in 2003 and grew fast during the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns, when radio controlled roadside bombs made jamming a frontline requirement. In 2007 it bought the bomb suit maker Med-Eng in a deal that left it heavily indebted, and by December 2009 the business had been recapitalised and taken over by the American private equity firm Versa Capital Management. In September 2013 it sold both the Med-Eng explosive ordnance disposal unit and its crew survivability group to The Safariland Group. What remained, and what the company is today, is the radio frequency countermeasures business.
The product line splits by how it is carried. EQUINOX NG is the current vehicle mounted electronic countermeasures system, built around contemporary electronic warfare hardware standards. SCORPION is the man-portable system, and the company passed its 500th unit in 2023, with a SCORPION 2 variant since. The 3XXX family, covering the 3140, 3230 and 3330, is an internally modular and upgradeable ECM range aimed at non-governmental organisations and other government departments as well as military users. Counter drone work runs through ANCILE, an operationally proven system that applies RF inhibition to commercial unmanned aircraft, and SECURIS, a mobile counter drone trailer launched at DSEI in 2025 that combines RF, radar and optical detection with RF defeat.
The engineering direction is set by the NXT programme, whose new radio frequency core was introduced at IDEX in 2025. It uses direct RF sampling across the whole span of spectrum used by drones and radio controlled devices, without tuners, and is built as an RF system on module paired with a customisable application interface card. That architecture lets one system detect, protect against and defeat a wider set of threats, and it is the basis of the company's move from a specialist jammer supplier towards a broader cyber electromagnetic activities position. Allen-Vanguard describes the aim as spectrum dominance in complex and contested RF environments.
What sits behind the hardware matters as much as the hardware. The company maintains a proprietary threat library assembled from more than 100,000 recorded incidents and attacks, and it uses that to develop and update the waveforms its systems transmit. Customers get that through a Threat Management Team and through field service representatives embedded with users, which is a service line in its own right rather than a warranty function. Both the Canadian and UK operations hold ISO 9001:2015 certification.
Head office is on St Laurent Boulevard in Ottawa, with a UK operation at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. Recent business has been export heavy, including a multi million dollar order from a South American customer for EQUINOX NG and SCORPION 2, orders from a NATO ally for SCORPION, and contracts in Africa. The company remains private and Versa Capital continues to be identified as the controlling interest in UK corporate filings.
