Allison Transmission has been in Indianapolis since James Allison founded it in 1915, and it makes one thing extremely well. Fully automatic transmissions for heavy vehicles are a narrow product category with a small number of credible suppliers, and Allison is the largest of them, shipping into more than 250 vehicle manufacturers. Revenue was 3.01 billion dollars in 2025 with net income of 623 million, which is an unusually profitable shape for a component maker. Around 3,400 people work for it, with plants in Indianapolis, Chennai in India and Szentgotthard in Hungary. The Carlyle Group and Onex took it out of General Motors in 2007 and it has traded on the New York Stock Exchange as ALSN since 2012. The Allison name also gave rise to the aircraft engine business that became a General Motors division and was sold to Rolls-Royce in 1995. The business splits by end market rather than by technology. On-highway trucks and buses are the volume, reported separately for North America and for everywhere else. Off-highway covers construction, mining and energy. Defense is the smallest of the three by revenue and the most strategically sticky. Service parts, support equipment and remanufacturing sit across all of them.

The commercial range is numbered by torque capacity. The 1000 and 2000 Series handle up to 365 horsepower, the 3000 Series up to 450, and the 4000 Series up to 800 with 2,360 pound-feet of torque. A 9-Speed sits in the middle of the range, and the TC10 was built specifically for tractor applications. Electrification arrived without abandoning the mechanical business. eGen Power is a family of motor-integrated electric axles including the 100D, 100S and 130D, eGen Flex is a diesel-electric hybrid aimed at transit buses, and eGen Force is the electrified defense product rated to 1,600 horsepower.

The defense line is where the company earns its place in a supplier directory. The X1100 cross-drive transmission is rated to 1,500 horsepower and 75 tons gross weight, which in practice means the M1 Abrams, and Allison has taken repeated US Army contracts for Abrams modernisation and for production supporting allied Abrams operators. The X200 covers lighter tracked vehicles up to 22 tons. The 3040 MX is a cross-drive rated to 800 horsepower and 40 tons that was selected for Mobile Protected Firepower, and the 4040 MX was specified for the CV90 MkIV built by BAE Systems Hagglunds. Defense transmissions are qualified over decades rather than years, which is why incumbency counts for so much in this corner of the market. On wheels, the 2500 Specialty Series was selected for AM General's JLTV A2, and Allison content appears on the Supacat Jackal 3 and on the Lynx offered for the XM30 combat vehicle programme. Behind the hardware sits the support business that keeps fleets running, Allison Genuine Parts, Allison Genuine Reman for remanufactured units, approved fluids, service tools and the Allison HUB information portal.
