Amentum

Logistics, space operations, digital transformation, and nuclear site management for government.

//Overview

Amentum formed in February 2020 when AECOM spun off its management services business, then grew fast through acquisition, absorbing DynCorp International later that year and PAE in 2022 before merging with Jacobs Engineering's Critical Mission Solutions and Cyber and Intelligence units in September 2024, a deal structured as a reverse merger that took the combined company public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker AMTM. What emerged is a sprawling government services company organized into six areas that read almost like separate businesses. Mission Modernization and Sustainment covers the DynCorp heritage: logistics, aviation maintenance, research development test and evaluation, C4ISR support, counter-UAS work, and naval engineering, plus work tied to the US and UK nuclear deterrent forces. Space Systems runs ground infrastructure and launch operations, and Amentum is the prime contractor for NASA's Exploration Ground Systems program at Kennedy Space Center, supporting Artemis launches and the Orion capsule alongside a separate propellants and life support contract there.

Digital Transformation is the software and cloud arm, building applications, managing cybersecurity, and running cloud migrations for federal customers, while a distinct Data Analytics and Cyber practice, drawn largely from the Jacobs Cyber and Intelligence unit, handles intelligence collection support, counterintelligence work, offensive and defensive cyber operations, biometrics, and communications for national security agencies. Sustainability and Environment is where Amentum does some of its largest dollar work: environmental remediation, site assessment, regulatory compliance, PFAS cleanup, and nuclear waste management, including a role on the Department of Energy's Hanford site in Washington state, one of the most complicated nuclear cleanup jobs in the country, through a joint venture with BWX Technologies and Fluor, though a court later set that specific award aside amid a bid protest. Advanced Energy Solutions rounds out the portfolio with renewable energy consulting, nuclear engineering support, commissioning, and regulatory licensing work, an area that has grown as utilities and governments push new nuclear and clean energy projects. The PAE acquisition brought base operations, training, and international development contracts, while DynCorp added decades of aviation logistics and contingency support experience in places like Afghanistan and the Middle East.

Roughly 53,000 employees now work across the combined company in more than twenty countries, most of them supporting the Department of Defense, NASA, the Department of Energy, and allied governments including the UK Ministry of Defence, where Amentum personnel work at facilities central to the UK's independent nuclear deterrent. The result is less a single defense contractor than a holding company for adjacent government services businesses, most of them unglamorous but essential: keeping aircraft flying, keeping nuclear sites safe, keeping networks running, and keeping astronauts supplied on the way to the launch pad.
