European heavy and mini launchers, France's submarine-launched deterrent, hypersonic demonstrators, space surveillance and propulsion equipment.
ArianeGroup builds Europe's heavy launcher and France's sea-based nuclear deterrent, and the fact that those two things sit inside one company is not an accident. Solid and cryogenic rocket propulsion, precision guidance and the industrial discipline to build very few units very reliably are the same skills either way. The group was created on 1 January 2015 as Airbus Safran Launchers, combining the launcher activities of Airbus with the space propulsion business of Safran, and took the ArianeGroup name in 2017. It is owned 50/50 by Airbus and Safran, with neither parent in control, and runs from Issy-les-Moulineaux outside Paris through a holding company with French and German subsidiaries. It employs roughly 8,000 people across France, Germany and the Netherlands, with offices in Washington, Singapore and Tokyo.
Space transportation is the public face. Ariane 6 is the current European heavy launcher, built for the European Space Agency and flown in two configurations, the two-booster Ariane 62 and the four-booster Ariane 64, with a first flight in July 2024. MaiaSpace, a wholly owned subsidiary, is developing Maia, a partly reusable mini-launcher sized for up to 500 kilograms to orbit. SyLEx is a suborbital launch system used by civil and military customers to test avionics and fly microgravity experiments. Arianespace, also wholly owned, markets and operates the launches.
Propulsion runs underneath all of it. ArianeGroup builds the Vulcain 2.1 cryogenic main stage engine and the re-ignitable Vinci upper stage engine for Ariane 6, plus the Astris kick stage for direct injection into high orbits. Through Europropulsion, its joint venture with Avio, it stands behind the P120C solid motor that serves as both an Ariane 6 strap-on booster and the Vega C first stage. Prometheus, a 100 tonne class reusable methane engine developed with ESA, is the demonstrator for whatever replaces the current generation.
Defence is the other half and is invisible from the launch pad. ArianeGroup is industrial prime for the M51 submarine-launched ballistic missile carried by the French Strategic Oceanic Force, covering design, development, production, maintenance and dismantling. The latest variant, M51.3, entered operational service in October 2025. V-MAX, the experimental manoeuvring vehicle programme, is France's hypersonic glider demonstrator, with ArianeGroup as industrial prime. Helix is the group's space surveillance network, described as Europe's largest privately operated one, running 23 optical and infrared stations toward a target of 30, tracking objects in orbit around the clock and flagging unusual satellite behaviour.
The equipment and services arm supplies what the group does not launch itself: chemical and electrical propulsion for spacecraft, antenna reflectors, composite central tubes, thermal protection, energetic materials and chemical components for launchers, and on the services side liquid hydrogen supply, non-destructive testing and technological risk management for industry, plus demilitarisation, dismantling, decontamination and submarine rescue systems for defence customers. Four specialist subsidiaries carry much of this. Sodern builds star trackers such as Auriga and Hydra along with neutron generators, Pyroalliance makes pyrotechnic and mechanical equipment for launchers, satellites, missiles and torpedoes, Nuclétudes does radiation hardening and vulnerability assessment, and A.P.P. produces igniters and gas generators.
