ASC is the Australian government company that built the Collins class submarines and has kept them at sea ever since. Formed in 1985 as Australian Submarine Corporation to deliver six diesel electric boats to a Swedish design, it was sold to private owners, then bought back by the Commonwealth in April 2000, and it remains wholly government owned. Around 2,600 people work for it, split across the Osborne Naval Shipyard in South Australia and Henderson in Western Australia, with a smaller footprint at HMAS Stirling. The shipbuilding half of the business went a different way. In December 2018 the surface shipbuilding operations were separated and taken over by BAE Systems Australia, leaving ASC focused on submarines.

Sustainment is the day job and it is unusually demanding work. Collins boats cycle through full cycle dockings at Osborne and intermediate maintenance at Henderson under a multi-year contract with the Royal Australian Navy, employing more than 700 people in South Australia and around 400 in Western Australia. Availability of the fleet improved sharply over the last decade from a low base, which is the metric that matters for a six-boat force. Sitting on top of that is the Life of Type Extension, approved in stages by government and beginning with HMAS Farncomb in 2026, which replaces diesel generators, main motors and other major systems to keep the class credible into the 2030s while the nuclear programme matures. That work alone occupies roughly 500 people in South Australia. ASC also designed and delivers submariner training at HMAS Stirling, running warfare, control room, mechanical systems and navigation courses for over thirty years and now using virtual reality to rehearse procedures ashore.

The AUKUS decisions reshaped the company's future. The Australian government named ASC its sovereign submarine partner, meaning ASC will sustain nuclear powered submarines in Australia, including visiting United States and United Kingdom boats, the Virginia class submarines Australia acquires, and the SSN-AUKUS boats to follow. For construction, ASC will form a joint venture with BAE Systems to build SSN-AUKUS at Osborne. That is a step change in skills, regulation and infrastructure rather than an extension of existing work, and the company has been recruiting and training toward it for several years. Alongside the headline programmes ASC does component repair using advanced manufacturing methods, builds and supports smaller craft, and manages a submarine supply chain that reaches deep into Australian industry. Australian Naval Infrastructure, the government entity that holds the shipyard estate, works beside it at Osborne. Two features distinguish ASC from a commercial contractor. Its shareholder is the Commonwealth, which means capability decisions and workforce decisions are taken with policy in the room. And it holds submarine knowledge that exists nowhere else in Australia, accumulated across a build programme that started in the late 1980s and a sustainment record stretching past three decades. Suppliers dealing with ASC should expect government contracting terms, long qualification timelines, and security requirements that tighten further as nuclear work ramps.
