Astra Microwave Products Limited
Radar, missile, EW, space, telemetry and weather radio frequency hardware
Astra Microwave Products was set up in Hyderabad in 1991 and has stayed close to one thing ever since, which is radio frequency and microwave hardware. The company trades on the National Stock Exchange and the BSE, employed 1,491 people at the end of March 2025 and passed 1,000 crore rupees of revenue in that financial year against an order book near 1,952 crore rupees. Its main plant is in Hyderabad, with a radar integration and test facility at Bangalore and a space focused research unit at Hardware Park. Defence accounted for about 80 percent of revenue in the 2024-25 year, space for 6 percent and the hydro met business for 3 percent, and the order book had grown past 2,500 crore rupees by the third quarter of the following year.
Defence supplies roughly four fifths of turnover. Astra builds transmit receive modules for active phased array radars across VHF, UHF, L, S, C, X, Ku and Ka bands, together with receiver exciters, array group receivers, beam forming units and power amplifiers, and it is one of the few Indian firms trusted with that part of a DRDO radar. Missile electronics is a second cluster, covering phased array seeker subsystems, radio proximity fuzes, command guidance units and transponders. For electronic warfare the company makes detector log video amplifiers, digital instantaneous frequency measurement units, baseline interferometer assemblies, switch filter units, spiral and blade antennas and down converters. Telemetry products include S band and L band receivers, airborne data and video transmitters, tele command equipment and auto tracking antenna systems.
Space work began around 2003 and now covers transponders, solid state power amplifiers, phase shifters, switch matrices, C band and Ku band receivers and ground station subsystems for ISRO satellites and launch vehicles. Meteorology and hydrology is a smaller but steady line selling automatic weather stations installed across India, Doppler weather radars and hydro met systems to government agencies. Telecommunications products and monolithic microwave integrated circuits, among them low noise amplifiers, wideband and power amplifiers, digital phase shifters, attenuators, switches and mixers, sit alongside S band mobile satellite service terminals. A joint venture with Rafael of Israel, Astra Rafael Comsys, sells software defined radios and electro optic products and turned over more than 200 crore rupees in the 2024-25 year. That venture carried an order book above 300 crore rupees at the end of the same year, with Astra holding half of it and Rafael the balance. Subsidiaries reach into semiconductors in Singapore and electronics manufacture in India. Customers are almost entirely Indian government agencies and the primes that serve them. Small company, long parts list. The pattern across all four verticals is the same: Astra sells the front end that sits behind an antenna, and someone else puts a badge on the finished system.
