Avient Protective Materials is the business behind Dyneema, the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibre that competes with aramid across most of the same protective applications. It was DSM Dyneema until September 2022, when Avient Corporation completed a 1.485 billion dollar purchase of DSM's protective materials business. It now sits inside Avient's Specialty Engineered Materials segment. The operating company is registered in Geleen in the Netherlands, on the Chemelot site, and the wider business runs roughly 1,100 people, six production plants and four research centres.
The material argument is straightforward. Dyneema is marketed as the world's strongest fibre, roughly fifteen times stronger than steel by weight and around forty percent stronger than aramid on a strength-to-weight basis, and it floats. For armour that translates into lower areal density for a given threat level, which is the whole game in helmets and plates where every gram sits on a soldier's neck or spine.
Ballistic protection is the defense-facing line. Hard armour uses unidirectional laminates in the HB series, running through HB2, HB26, HB50, HB56, HB80, HB210 and HB212, used in ballistic plates, helmets and shields. HB80 was developed against a joint US Army and Marine Corps challenge to raise helmet fragmentation performance by at least 35 percent and was selected for the US forces' Enhanced Combat Helmet. HB212 belongs to the newer Dyneema Force Multiplier Technology platform, which also covers soft armour materials used in bullet and stab resistant vests. Armour integrators across Europe and North America press these laminates into finished plates and shells, so the material reaches ministries of defence through converters rather than directly.
The rest of the business is not defense at all and is larger. Maritime and offshore takes Dyneema into mooring lines, subsea installation rope and permanent mooring for floating renewable energy. Heavy lifting uses it for crane ropes and slings, where a synthetic line that a two-person crew can handle replaces a steel wire rope that needs machinery. Industrial protection covers cut-resistant gloves and workwear. Aquaculture and commercial fishing use it for netting and trawl gear. Consumer sport picks it up in sailing lines, kitesurfing and outdoor equipment.
Production is spread across Greenville and Mesa in the United States, Heerlen in the Netherlands, Laiwu in China and Tsuruga in Japan, with technology centres in Stanley North Carolina, Heerlen, Singapore and Mumbai. That geography matters for defense buyers, since domestic supply chain requirements in the United States and Europe increasingly drive where a fibre can be sourced from.
What a defense customer is buying here is a material input with a strong brand attached, not a finished system. Avient does not build armour. It supplies the fibre and laminate that armour is made from, and its name reaches end users mostly through the plate and helmet manufacturers who buy it.
