Bechtel National, Inc.

Engineering and construction for America's nuclear weapons complex, missile defense, and national laboratories.

//Overview

Bechtel is a private, family-controlled engineering and construction company that has been building for the U.S. government for more than 80 years, and Bechtel National is the entity through which most of that government work runs. The parent company was founded in 1898 and is now headquartered in Reston, Virginia, still owned by the Bechtel family five generations in, with roughly 55,000 employees across nearly 50 countries. Its government book covers nuclear security, missile defense, chemical demilitarization, and national laboratory operations, work that rarely makes headlines but underpins a lot of the infrastructure the rest of the defense industry depends on. The nuclear side is the deepest piece. Bechtel-led Consolidated Nuclear Security operates and modernizes the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the site responsible for producing and processing enriched uranium for the country's nuclear deterrent and naval reactors, and a companion Uranium Processing Facility project is replacing Y-12's aging enrichment buildings.

At Hanford in Washington State, Bechtel designed and built the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant, a vitrification facility meant to lock decades of Cold War nuclear waste into stable glass, and it separately operates the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, the country's only deep geologic repository for transuranic waste, under a contract extended by the Department of Energy. Bechtel Plant Machinery, a related unit, builds nuclear propulsion components for Navy submarines and aircraft carriers. Missile defense and strategic deterrence pull in a second cluster of work. Bechtel built silo and support infrastructure for the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system, and it is now teamed with Northrop Grumman to modernize the launch infrastructure for the Sentinel program, the Air Force's replacement for the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. That work is infrastructure and construction, not the missile itself, but it is infrastructure the program cannot proceed without.

A third line handles chemical weapons destruction, with Bechtel-designed and operated demilitarization plants at Blue Grass, Kentucky, and Pueblo, Colorado, that neutralized the last of the U.S. chemical weapons stockpile under treaty obligations. Bechtel also supports national laboratories and test ranges for the government, including work at Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos, the Arnold Engineering Development Complex, and the Reagan Test Site in the Marshall Islands, and it has built launch infrastructure for NASA, including the Mobile Launcher 2 platform supporting the Artemis program. Because Bechtel is privately held, financial detail on the National subsidiary specifically is thin, and precise headcount and incorporation date for that entity are not independently confirmable. What is well documented is the pattern: wherever the U.S. government needs a hazardous, highly regulated facility built or operated safely for decades, Bechtel National tends to be the contractor holding the keys.
