Bharat Dynamics Limited
Air defence, anti-tank, air-to-air, torpedoes, mines and countermeasures.
Bharat Dynamics Limited is the Indian government's main production house for guided missiles. Set up in 1970 at Hyderabad to build an anti-tank missile under French licence, the company now sits at the end of almost every missile programme the Defence Research and Development Organisation hands to industry, and it holds Mini Ratna Category-I status under the Ministry of Defence. The Government of India remains the majority owner. Shares have traded on the NSE and BSE since a 2018 listing that made BDL one of the few Indian defence public sector undertakings an investor can buy into directly.
The portfolio splits along the lines the company uses itself: surface-to-air missiles, air-to-air missiles, anti-tank guided missiles, underwater weapons, launchers, countermeasures and test equipment. Air defence is the largest of them. BDL assembles the Akash weapon system for the Army and Air Force, has completed the first production model of the Advanced Akash variant, and is the production agency for the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile developed with Israel Aerospace Industries as well as the Quick Reaction and vertically launched short-range systems. In the air-to-air line it builds Astra, the beyond-visual-range missile the Air Force cleared for series production. Anti-tank work runs from Soviet-origin designs still made under licence, the Konkurs-M and the INVAR round fired through tank guns, through the Milan-2T, to indigenous designs. Those include Nag, the man-portable ATGM, the helicopter-launched Helina, and Amogha-III, a fire-and-forget round BDL developed in its own R&D division rather than receiving from DRDO.
Underwater weapons are a quieter but substantial business. BDL makes the Varunastra heavyweight torpedo and the lightweight TAL, the C-303 and C-303S anti-torpedo decoy launching systems, multi-influential ground mines that read acoustic, magnetic, pressure and electric-field signatures, and the Dishani air-dropped sonobuoy. Countermeasures cover the dispensing systems fitted to Indian combat aircraft. Test equipment for the Konkurs launcher and missile, the Unified Launcher, and the FLAME adapter that lets a Fagot launcher fire Milan-2T rounds fill out the rest. Production runs from Kanchanbagh and Bhanur near Hyderabad and from Visakhapatnam, with further units announced at Ibrahimpatnam in Telangana, Amravati in Maharashtra and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, the last of them aimed at propellants. Exports have picked up as Indian missile systems find buyers in Southeast Asia and Africa, and the order book has grown sharply alongside India's air defence build-out. Roughly two thousand people work there, a small headcount for the scale of hardware involved, because BDL leans on a supplier base of Indian small and medium manufacturers for subassemblies and keeps final integration and testing in house. What ties the portfolio together is the handover model that defines an Indian defence public sector undertaking. DRDO designs a weapon, BDL industrialises it and holds the production agency role, and the services order against that arrangement rather than through open competition. The arrangement gives the company a pipeline no private entrant can match and leaves it carrying whatever schedule risk the design phase hands down.
