Bharat Electronics Limited

Bharat Electronics Limited was set up in 1954 under India's Ministry of Defence with a single mandate: stop the country from having to import every piece of military electronics it needed. Seven decades later BEL is the backbone of India's defense electronics base, a Navratna public sector enterprise headquartered in Bengaluru with production units spread across several states. Its radar business alone spans an enormous range, from battlefield surveillance and weapon-locating radars for the Army to naval fire control and air surveillance radars operating from C-band up through Ka-band, much of it developed jointly with DRDO. Sonar is a parallel strength, with hull-mounted, towed-array, and airborne systems supplied for surface ships, submarines, and maritime patrol aircraft.

On the electronic warfare side, BEL builds shipborne, airborne, and ground-based jamming and intercept systems, including its role as lead integrator on the Samyukta mobile EW system developed with DRDO and the Corps of Signals. Communications is another pillar: BEL makes software-defined radios used across all three services, most recently under a large 2025 contract to supply secure multi-band radios to the Coast Guard, alongside tactical and satellite communication terminals. The company also produces command-and-control software and network-centric warfare systems, most visibly the Akashteer air defense control network that ties Army radars, electro-optical sensors, and ground weapons into a single automated air-picture grid. Weapon-system electronics is a further line, covering fire-control computers, signal conditioners, and interface hardware that connect missile seekers and airframes to guidance and telemetry systems, along with launcher electronics for missiles like Akash and the naval Trishul system.

An electro-optics division supplies thermal imagers, laser rangefinders, and periscopes for tanks, aircraft, and ships, and BEL has pushed into homeland security with coastal surveillance networks, access control, and cybersecurity products. Away from pure defense work, BEL also manufactures civilian electronics including solar photovoltaic modules and components for the broadcast and telecom sectors, a legacy of its founding-era mandate to build up India's electronics manufacturing base broadly, not just for the military. The government retains majority ownership though the stock trades publicly on the NSE and BSE, and BEL has increasingly taken on systems-integration roles that used to go to foreign primes, positioning itself as India's default electronics partner on nearly every major indigenous weapons program from Tejas to the Navy's newest frigates. That breadth means BEL rarely appears as the headline name on a platform, since it usually supplies the sensors and mission systems bolted onto someone else's airframe, hull, or chassis, but few Indian defense programs of any size reach production without a BEL subsystem somewhere inside them.
