Bharat Forge Limited
Forgings and castings for autos, energy and rail, plus artillery and armour.
Bharat Forge is a Pune forging group that turned itself into one of India's larger private defence contractors without giving up the business that built it. Founded in 1961 by the Kalyani family, it runs what it describes as the world's largest single-location forging operation, and its industrial customers still account for most of the revenue. The company is listed on the NSE and BSE, with the Kalyani promoter group holding a large minority stake. Group revenue passed fifteen thousand crore rupees in the 2025 financial year.
The commercial side spans ten declared segments. Automotive forgings, crankshafts and front axle beams among them, go to truck and passenger vehicle makers in India, Europe and North America. Power, oil and gas supply forged components for turbines, wellheads and pressure equipment. Rail, marine, construction and mining feed heavy vehicle and equipment builders. Aerospace covers structural and engine forgings and machined parts for civil and military airframes. E-mobility runs through electric powertrain work and an investment in Indian two-wheeler maker Tork Motors. Castings sit under subsidiaries including JS Auto Cast. Defence and aerospace were consolidated in 2021 into a wholly owned subsidiary, Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited, which now fronts that business.
KSSL organises itself around artillery, protected vehicles, armoured vehicle upgrades and MRO, small arms, ammunition, unmanned and marine systems, air defence and defence electronics. Artillery is the flagship. The company partnered DRDO on the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System and separately developed the Bharat 52 and Bharat 45 towed guns, the MAG-ER ultra-light howitzer at under eight tonnes, the Garuda 105 vehicle-mounted light gun, and the MArG family of truck-mounted 155mm systems in 39, 45 and 52 calibre configurations. Protected vehicles centre on the Kalyani M4, a mine-resistant 4x4 in Indian Army service and used on United Nations deployments, joined by the Simha 4x4 light armoured vehicle developed with Paramount. Ammunition began as shells for the group's own guns and has widened to naval, unmanned and small arms natures. Marine and unmanned work brought the Mine Reconnaissance Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, expendable underwater targets and mobile target emulators, and a Ministry of Defence underwater systems contract in late 2025. A joint venture with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems adds precision guided munitions and electro-optics. Export ambition is unusual for an Indian defence firm of this size, and KSSL has shown its gun systems at Eurosatory and DEFEA while signing a co-development arrangement with AM General and Mandus Group aimed at markets outside India. The forging base is what makes the defence ambition credible. A 155mm gun barrel and a truck crankshaft draw on related metallurgy, heat treatment and heavy press capacity, and Bharat Forge owned all of it long before it bid for a defence contract. Few of its Indian competitors in artillery started from that position, and none of them can fall back on an industrial order book when defence procurement slows.
