BlueBird Aero Systems Ltd.

BlueBird Aero Systems was founded in 2002 by Ronen Nadir and works out of the Emek Hefer industrial park, an hour north of Tel Aviv. It occupies the part of the Israeli unmanned market that the large houses tend to pass over, systems light enough for a brigade or a battalion to own and operate itself rather than request from a national asset. Israel Aerospace Industries bought half the company in 2020, leaving Nadir with the other half and his job as chief executive, and the arrangement gives BlueBird access to IAI integration work and export channels while the product line stays its own. This profile covers BlueBird's own scope rather than the parent's.

The catalogue is layered by weight. MicroB is the smallest, a hand-launched mini system for a squad. SpyLite sits above it at about 9.5 kilograms with roughly 50 kilometres of range, developed in cooperation with Rafael and sold into India, Chile and Ethiopia among others, and Spy-i extends the same family. WanderB-VTOL is the interesting piece of engineering: a 13 kilogram man-packable aircraft that takes off and lands vertically on quad rotors, then transitions to fixed wing cruise, so a unit gets a 50 kilometre endurance aircraft without needing a launcher, a runway or a recovery net. One European customer took more than 150 aircraft and a later order for 100 WanderB-VTOL units. ThunderB is the tactical top of the range at 32 kilograms with about 150 kilometres of reach, also offered in a ThunderB-VTOL configuration for the same reason.

Loitering munitions came later and pulled the company into the effects business. SpyX, unveiled at the 2023 Paris Air Show, is a loitering munition with 50 kilometres of operational range, an hour and a half of mission time and autonomous electro-optic guided attack, and it is designed to work alongside ThunderB-VTOL so the reconnaissance aircraft finds and the munition strikes. Morocco began local production of SpyX in 2025 under a technology transfer arrangement, which puts BlueBird in the industrial partnership business as well as the export one. BarB-X is the first person view platform, a cheap airframe for real time reconnaissance and precision strike at short range. Around the aircraft sit ground control units, datalinks and the mission software, sold as complete systems rather than airframes, and the company delivers applications work as well: artillery target acquisition, convoy and force protection, border monitoring, infrastructure protection, maritime patrol, search and rescue, disaster management, law enforcement support and mapping on demand, where the aircraft returns an orthophoto product rather than a video feed. The ground control units are common across the range, so a unit that already operates SpyLite can take on WanderB-VTOL or a SpyX munition without retraining its operators on a different console, and that commonality is much of what BlueBird is actually selling. Export has always carried the business. India, Chile and Ethiopia fly the mini systems, one European state accounts for more than 250 aircraft across two orders, and Morocco now builds munitions under licence.
