Bluecher GmbH

Bluecher GmbH is a German family business built on one piece of chemistry. Hasso von Bluecher founded it in 1969 at Erkrath near Duesseldorf, and the company has spent five decades developing spherical high performance adsorbents, small carbon beads that work along the same lines as activated carbon but flow, pack and bond into fabrics far better. Everything the company sells is an application of that material. It holds more than 350 patents around it and, unusually for the sector, makes the adsorbent itself rather than buying it in.

The defence side is the SARATOGA brand of air permeable CBRN protective clothing. The principle is that a suit made from an adsorptive compound material can breathe, which matters enormously to a soldier who has to keep working in it, while still binding chemical warfare agents before they reach the skin. The range covers protective overgarments worn over a normal uniform, protective duty uniforms for people who need to wear the protection all day, protective undergarments, complete skin protection systems, a variant built for hot climates, and SARATOGA Fragment Protective Clothing, which adds protection against improvised explosive device fragmentation to the chemical barrier. The company states that more than 12 million SARATOGA suits and protective systems have been supplied, that the technology is in service in over 55 countries including 22 NATO members, and that no competing CB clothing technology has been through more live agent testing. Users run from armed forces and civil defence organisations through police and special forces units and fire brigades to inspectors working for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

The civil side of the business uses the same beads under the SARATECH name. In air and gas filtration the media reduce emissions, remove odours and adsorb oil additives, and are used to clean cabin air in aircraft and in specialised vehicles operating in hazardous environments. In water and fluid treatment SARATECH adsorbents are used for dechlorination, for industrial process and waste water treatment, and for stripping micropollutants such as pesticide residues out of drinking water. It is a genuinely different customer base from the military clothing line, but the underlying manufacturing is shared.

Production runs across three German sites. Erkrath handles development, protective clothing manufacture and sales. Adsorbent production sits at Premnitz in Brandenburg, with further capacity in the Havelland region near Berlin. Bluecher describes this as production depth from raw adsorbent through to a finished suit, and it is the main argument the company makes for why it can control quality and supply in a way that assemblers of bought-in media cannot.

Ownership has stayed in the founding family, which is rare in a defence supply chain that has consolidated heavily around private equity and listed primes. The company does not publish headcount or revenue. It sits a layer below the primes, supplying material and finished garments into national protective clothing programmes rather than bidding for them directly, which is why the name is far less visible than the twelve million suit figure would suggest.
