BMC Otomotiv Sanayi ve Ticaret
Main battle tanks, MRAPs, tactical trucks, buses and indigenous engines.
BMC started in Izmir in 1964 as a licensee of the British Motor Corporation, assembling Austin trucks for the Turkish market. Six decades on it is one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in the country, with annual capacity of about 12,500 units, more than 3,500 staff and over 400,000 vehicles built. Ownership is split, with 51 percent held by Turkish shareholders and 49 percent by the Qatar Armed Forces Industry Committee, an arrangement that has shaped both the export pattern and the order book. Trucks and buses still occupy a large share of the plant. The truck range covers tractor units, road and construction models and light trucks, while the bus line runs from the 8.5 metre Neocity through the Procity city bus in diesel, CNG and battery electric forms up to 18 metre articulated versions, with the Neoport completing the passenger range.
The defence industry business is what BMC is known for outside Turkey. Kirpi, a mine resistant ambush protected vehicle, made the company's name during Turkish counter insurgency operations, and the Kirpi II 4x4 is the current model, shown to Gulf customers at DIMDEX in 2026. Vuran is the lighter MRAP that entered service in 2019, Amazon is a multi purpose 4x4 armoured vehicle sold to Qatar, and Turan is an armoured cargo and personnel carrier. Altug 8x8 is the armoured combat vehicle contracted with the Presidency of Defence Industries. Tulga is a purpose built armoured SUV developed under the ballistic protected patrol intervention vehicle project, weighing around eight tonnes and entering delivery in 2026. Tactical wheeled trucks in 5 and 10 tonne classes, tank transporters, water and refuelling tankers and riot control vehicles round out the military catalogue. Commercial products reach roughly 80 countries while military vehicles have gone to seventeen.
The largest programme is the Altay main battle tank. BMC won serial production, opened a dedicated Ankara factory in September 2025 and began deliveries, with eleven tanks due in 2026 under a contract structure covering 250 vehicles across T1 and T2 configurations. Firtina self propelled howitzer work runs alongside it. BMC Power is the powertrain arm and the reason those programmes can proceed without foreign licences. Its Batu engine is a twelve cylinder turbodiesel rated at roughly 1,500 horsepower for the Altay, the Utku engine drives the Firtina, and 400 and 600 horsepower units plus matching transmissions are in development. BMC Rail Systems, a joint venture with Stadler Rail of Switzerland, is the fifth leg of the group and builds rail and metro vehicles. The tank plant is sized for up to eight vehicles a month, which would put annual output near 96 if orders ever sustained that rate, and the fact that a bus and truck maker now holds the national tank line says a good deal about how Turkish defence industrial policy has been run over the past decade, with volume manufacturers pulled into programmes that older state arsenals once held.
