Employee owned naval architecture, maritime engineering and defence consultancy
BMT is a design house and technical consultancy rather than a builder. It draws warships, auxiliaries and research vessels, then hands the drawings to a shipyard, and it advises defence ministries on how to buy and sustain the things it designs. The structure is unusual. BMT Group Limited is a company limited by guarantee with its assets held in an employee benefit trust, so there is no external shareholder pushing quarterly numbers, which the firm treats as the reason it can take long view technical positions. Around 1,300 people work from more than twenty five offices across eight countries, with the heaviest concentrations in the UK, Australia, Canada and the United States. The origins go back to wartime research, including the test tanks used to develop the bouncing bomb.
Naval design is the best known output. The AEGIR support tanker design became the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Tide class, drawn by BMT and built under subcontract in South Korea. VENATOR-110 is the light frigate concept that fed into export and domestic frigate thinking, VENARI-85 is a minehunter and offshore patrol vessel hybrid, and SALVAS covers submarine rescue, salvage, towing and diving support. ELLIDA is the multi role logistics ship concept, now in a second generation, aimed at amphibious support and disaster relief roles. MODUS is the uncrewed modular ship concept. BMT also contributed to the design of the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers and drew the Australian Antarctic icebreaker RSV Nuyina.
The consultancy side is larger than the drawing board and spans four service lines. Maritime design and consultancy covers vessels and port infrastructure across the whole lifecycle. Asset monitoring and sustainment looks after maritime, offshore and pipeline assets in service. Environmental and climate solutions handles coastal modelling, flood risk and environmental impact, which is where the widely used TUFLOW hydraulic modelling software comes from. Defence and security advice and services supports government capability procurement, requirements work and business transformation. Software products sit alongside the advice, among them REMBRANDT ship handling simulation, the DEEP and DISC data tools, RAMtr@ck reliability tracking and ROC-Sim.
Markets run wider than defence. BMT works in commercial maritime, energy and resources, government, infrastructure, security and policing, and marine claims and accident investigation, where its surveyors are called in after collisions, groundings and cargo losses. Offshore wind support vessel design and wind tunnel work on large structures fall out of the same engineering base. For a defence buyer the value is specific. BMT is one of a small number of independent naval architecture practices that can carry a warship design from concept through to a build ready package without owning a yard, which makes it useful to navies that want design authority separated from the shipbuilder. Employee ownership reinforces the point, since there is no yard in the group whose order book a design decision could be bent to serve. That independence is most of the pitch.
