Bruker Corporation is best known as a scientific instrument maker, building the mass spectrometers, magnetic resonance systems, and X-ray instruments that fill research labs and pharmaceutical companies around the world, but a meaningful part of its business is built specifically for military and homeland security detection missions. Founded in 1960 and headquartered in Billerica, Massachusetts, Bruker trades publicly on the Nasdaq and organizes itself around a handful of divisions, chiefly Bruker Scientific Instruments, which covers Bruker AXS, Bruker BioSpin, Bruker Daltonics, and Bruker Optics, alongside its Bruker Energy & Supercon Technologies unit. The defense-relevant work sits mostly inside chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives detection, an area Bruker has treated as a core competency for decades rather than a side project. The RAID series of handheld chemical warfare agent detectors, including the RAID-M100, uses ion mobility spectrometry to identify vapor and swab samples in the field, and the company markets it for exactly the kind of hot-zone, post-mission, and reconnaissance-vehicle use that military CBRN units and first responders need.

The RAID-P extends similar detection to portal and fixed-site configurations. On the standoff side, Bruker's FT-IR spectrometers, including the RAPIDplus system, are built to military ruggedization standards and can detect, identify, and monitor chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals from several kilometers away without putting an operator near the hazard. Bruker's CBRNE customer base runs from the US National Guard, which has bought hundreds of its handheld chemical detectors under multi-year contracts, to NBC reconnaissance vehicle programs like the German Fuchs/Fox, which has carried Bruker detection suites for chemical and radiological reconnaissance. That mix of dismounted handheld gear and vehicle-integrated detection systems lets Bruker sell into both individual soldier equipment programs and larger platform integration efforts.

Outside of CBRNE detection, the bulk of Bruker's roughly 11,000 employees work on instruments with no direct military application at all: nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry systems for pharmaceutical research, X-ray diffraction tools for materials science, and superconducting magnet technology through its BEST division. That commercial scientific instrument business is what generates most of Bruker's revenue and what most of the market associates with the Bruker name. Still, for defense buyers specifically, Bruker is a recognized name in chemical and biological detection instrumentation, built on decades of applying its core spectroscopy and mass spectrometry expertise to a threat detection problem rather than a purely academic or industrial one, and its handheld and standoff CWA detectors remain in active use across NATO militaries and civilian CBRN response units alike.
