Canik - Samsun Yurt Savunma Sanayi ve Ticaret A.S.

High volume pistols, heavy machine guns, weapon stations and optics.

//Overview

Samsun Yurt Savunma was founded in 1998 and sells almost everything under the Canik name, which comes from the district of Samsun where the factory sits. The corporate head office is in Istanbul. Manufacturing stays on the Black Sea coast, where the company claims output of up to 460,000 9 mm pistols a year, a figure that would place it among the highest volume handgun producers anywhere. Exports reach more than sixty countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, and the United States civilian market has been the commercial engine, where Canik pistols built a reputation for delivering competition style features at a price well below the American and Austrian incumbents.

The pistol range is the core of the business. TP9 is the original striker fired family, spanning the SF duty gun, the longer slide SFx, the Elite Combat and various subcompact versions, and it has gone to military and law enforcement buyers as well as civilians. The Mete series arrived in 2022 as a redesign rather than a refresh, tightening the grip geometry, the trigger and the optics cut, and it extends through the SF, SFx and the single stack MC9. The SFx Rival line is the competition end of the same architecture. Around the guns the company sells its own optics and accessories, including the MOxL enclosed emitter red dot and the Falcon Flex mounting system, plus holsters, cases and apparel that together turn a gunmaker into a consumer brand.

The heavier side of Samsun Yurt Savunma is less visible outside Turkey and growing faster. The group builds M2 and M3 pattern 12.7 mm heavy machine guns, and the Canik M3 Falcon is a purpose designed .50 calibre gun for aerial platforms that fires at about 1,100 rounds a minute with an open bolt action chosen to manage heat and avoid cook-off during long bursts. Exports of the M3 Falcon began in 2025 and 2026, with more than forty guns shipped to Azerbaijan for fitting to over twenty helicopters and initial deliveries to Pakistan, marketed specifically as a way for helicopters to engage drones. Remote weapon stations and electro-mechanical weapon integration sit beside that, as does ammunition manufacture, which gives the group a position in every layer from the round to the mount. The company presents all of this as an integrated defence ecosystem rather than a catalogue of separate businesses, and it has been pushing into NATO member markets in Europe on that basis. For a firm that was a niche handgun exporter fifteen years ago, the shift from sporting goods shelves to helicopter door guns is a considerable one. The logic behind it is straightforward enough. Pistol volume pays for the machine tools, the metallurgy and the quality systems, and those same capabilities carry across to a belt fed .50 calibre gun far more readily than they would carry across to, say, electronics or sensors. Turkey's broader defence build-out did the rest, since a domestic customer base buying helicopters, armoured vehicles and naval craft creates demand for mounts and guns that a pistol maker with spare engineering capacity is well placed to answer.
