Caterpillar Defense

Military diesel and gas engines, generator sets, marine propulsion, earthmoving equipment and worldwide parts and field support.

//Overview

Caterpillar Defense is the defence arm of Caterpillar Inc., not a separate legal entity. It is the channel through which Caterpillar sells engines, power generation and earthmoving equipment to armed forces and government agencies, and it manages the multi-year military contracts that come with that work. Caterpillar itself dates to 1925 and is one of the largest industrial manufacturers in the world, so the defence group draws on a product catalogue and a dealer network built primarily for construction, mining and marine customers rather than for the military.

Engines are the deepest part of the offering and the part most likely to be invisible to the end user. Caterpillar diesel and natural gas engines cover roughly 5 to 21,715 brake horsepower and turn up inside a long list of combat, tactical and support vehicles. The C7 powers the Cougar mine resistant ambush protected vehicle and the Iraqi Light Armored Vehicle at around 330 horsepower. The C13 was used in the Buffalo MRAP A2 alongside Caterpillar's own CX31 six-speed transmission. Larger engines from the same families go into ships, generator sets and prime power installations.

Power generation is the second pillar and the one most relevant to expeditionary energy. Caterpillar builds standby and prime power generator sets across a very wide output band, used for base power, forward operating sites and remote installations where the grid either does not exist or cannot be trusted. On the marine side the engines are sold as integrated propulsion packages, ship service sets, emergency generators and auxiliary power units, with propulsion engines from 46 to 13,600 horsepower and marine generator sets from 5 to 9,340 kilowatts. The C32 marine generator set is one of the recognisable products in that range.

The machine side is the business most people picture. Military engineering units buy Caterpillar dozers including the D6K, D6T, D7R, D8T and D9R, the 120M motor grader with all-wheel drive, 924H and 966H wheel loaders, 613C and 621G wheel tractor-scrapers, the 320DL excavator, the 963D track loader, 277C multi terrain loaders, and a range of rollers and compactors including the CS-433C, CS-56, PS-150D and CB-534D. Articulated dump trucks, backhoe loaders, pavers and all-terrain forklifts fill out the fleet. For units working in contested areas Caterpillar offers armoured crew protection kits that provide protection on all sides including roof and floor, with transparent armour so the operator can still see the work.

Sustainment is a genuine differentiator rather than a footnote. Caterpillar supports defence customers through the same dealer network it uses commercially, covering more than 200 countries and around 1,900 dealer locations, with field service technicians and a global parts distribution system. Operator and maintainer training is supported by virtual trainer simulators. For a military customer the appeal is that a Caterpillar machine or engine deployed almost anywhere in the world sits close to a parts depot and a technician who already knows it, which is a harder thing to build than the equipment itself.
