Chemring Nobel
Europe's largest HMX producer, plus RDX, NTO and energetic plasticisers.
There are very few places in Europe that make advanced military high explosives at industrial scale, and one of them is a wooded site on the Oslo fjord at Saetre. Chemring Nobel traces its line to 1865, when Alfred Nobel's nitroglycerin work led to Norway's first explosives factory, and to 1876, when production moved from Lysaker to Engene at Saetre where it still sits. About 250 people work there. Chemring Group as a whole employs around 2,600 people across eleven production sites. The company belongs to that British parent and ships energetic materials to customers in more than fifty countries, most of them NATO members or NATO partners.
High explosives are the headline. Chemring Nobel is Europe's largest producer of HMX, the most powerful high explosive made in industrial quantities, and it delivers the material in a range of crystal sizes and size distributions, tuning crystal morphology and sensitivity to a customer's requirement. Reduced sensitivity grades are produced for insensitive munitions qualification. RDX comes off the same site as the cheaper and still powerful workhorse for shells and warheads, and NTO is the insensitive explosive that lets a designer meet modern safety rules without losing too much output. Most of what leaves Saetre is qualified against US, German or NATO military specifications rather than a house standard. Only two manufacturers of advanced military explosives operate in Europe at all, which is why output from this one site matters to NATO and European ammunition programmes well beyond Norway.
Explosive compositions are the second family. The plant supplies pressable formulations such as OWC and HWC, which bind HMX or RDX with wax and graphite, and melt cast mixtures including the Octols, HMX blended with TNT in various weight ratios. MCX-6100 is its own insensitive melt cast composition, NTO and RDX in a DNAN binder, developed as a filling for large calibre shells in the 120mm and 155mm classes. The third family is chemistry rather than explosives: the Alkyl-NENA energetic plasticisers, produced in industrial quantities since 1998, with Butyl-NENA the main grade alongside methyl, ethyl and propyl variants and the MEN-42 eutectic blend. They soften propellant grains and stand in for nitroglycerin in gun and rocket charges.
Demand has outrun the site. Northrop Grumman signed a fifteen year sourcing agreement for HMX to feed warhead production at Rocket Center in West Virginia, fixing annual quantities and lead times. The Norwegian government and the European Union have together put around 32 million pounds into expanding capacity at Saetre, enough to more than double output, and Chemring Nobel and the Norwegian state have run a feasibility study into an entirely new HMX, RDX and NTO plant on the Hurum peninsula. That project is early, locally contested and years from producing anything. Safety, quality and process development work sits underneath all of it, governed by Norway's major accident regulations.
