Comtech Telecommunications has been building communications equipment since 1967, growing from its Long Island roots into a satellite and tactical communications supplier now based in Chandler, Arizona, after a series of moves and restructurings over the decades. The company trades on Nasdaq under the ticker CMTL and has been through a difficult financial stretch recently, including a wider net loss in fiscal 2025 on declining revenue, but its underlying technology base in troposcatter and satellite ground systems remains a genuine niche strength that few competitors match. Troposcatter is the core of that reputation. The technology bounces microwave signals off the lower layers of the atmosphere to carry communications over the horizon, well beyond line of sight, without needing a satellite link or a chain of relay towers across hostile or difficult terrain. Comtech's Troposcatter Family of Systems spans several configurations built around that same principle.

The CS67PLUS is a frequency-agile software defined radio that operates across a wide swath of spectrum with adaptive coding and modulation to keep links up as conditions change. COMET, which the company describes as the smallest over-the-horizon tactical troposcatter system available, is built for medium-range links up to about 60 kilometers in a compact, portable package suited to forward-deployed units. The Modular Transportable Transmission System extends that same troposcatter approach into a rapidly deployable, transit-case-based configuration for units that need to set up and tear down communications infrastructure quickly. On the satellite ground side, Comtech's NetPerformer satellite routers combine data routing, multiplexing, and voice gateway functions in a single device, letting operators run converged voice, data, and video traffic over satellite or terrestrial backhaul rather than maintaining separate hardware for each. That ground infrastructure work extends into a broader satellite and space communications segment covering ground station technology, system integration, and signal processing equipment used across GEO, MEO, and LEO satellite constellations.

The company also runs a public-sector safety business, now branded Allerium, that handles emergency call routing, location validation, and related network functions for state and local government 911 systems, a business that sits alongside its defense work rather than inside it but reflects the same core competency in mission-critical, always-on communications infrastructure. Comtech markets its combined defense and security portfolio under the banner of supporting Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance requirements, a broader framing than troposcatter alone but one that fits how the military actually buys this kind of gear, as part of an integrated communications architecture rather than a single stand-alone system. For a company its size, Comtech occupies an unusually specific and defensible corner of the tactical communications market, one built on decades of over-the-horizon radio engineering that larger, more diversified primes have generally not tried to replicate in-house.
