Crane Aerospace & Electronics

Sensing, power, landing, and microwave systems for military and space aircraft.

//Overview

Crane Aerospace & Electronics is the aerospace and electronics segment of Crane Company, the industrial conglomerate that traces back to Richard Teller Crane's 1855 Chicago valve and fittings business. The aerospace segment is a much newer addition, built up over decades through acquisition of specialist suppliers whose brand names, ELDEC, Hydro-Aire, Lear Romec, Keltec, and Interpoint among them, still show up in the product lines today even though they now operate under the Crane Aerospace & Electronics name. That heritage-brand structure is part of why the business reads as several specialist suppliers bundled together rather than one company with a single product identity. Sensing Components and Systems is one core group, supplying proximity sensors and systems, including its SmartStem and FLEXtech product families, for landing gear, doors, and flight control surfaces, along with tire pressure monitoring and fuel gauging systems.

Landing Systems builds on that with hydraulic and electric brake control systems, including antiskid and autobrake functionality, plus the broader electronic and hydraulic subsystems that control landing gear. Fluid and Thermal Management rounds out the mechanical side, designing pumps, valves, and heat exchangers for aerospace and defense fluid systems, an area where Crane's Hydro-Aire and Lear Romec heritage brands do much of the underlying engineering. On the electronics side, Power Solutions, marketed partly under the Interpoint brand, supplies rugged power conversion products, including DC-DC converters and EMI filters, for commercial aviation, defense, and space customers who need power hardware that survives extreme temperature and radiation environments. Microwave Solutions supplies integrated microwave assemblies and space-qualified passive components used in radar, electronic warfare, and communications payloads, a business that increasingly overlaps with the growth in satellite constellations and advanced radar programs.

Cabin Systems, a smaller product line, supplies water and waste system components for aircraft interiors. Across all of these groups, Crane Aerospace & Electronics positions itself around a common theme, supplying the sensing, power, and control hardware that other companies' airframes, spacecraft, and combat systems depend on without ever building a platform of its own. Its own materials describe applications spanning ground vehicles moving toward more-electric and hybrid propulsion, all-electric aircraft and unmanned systems, radar and guidance systems, and the satellite networks now expanding rapidly in low earth orbit, which gives a sense of how broadly the segment's underlying technology, precision sensing and rugged power, gets applied across very different platforms.
