Curtiss-Wright traces its name back to 1929, when the merger of Glenn Curtiss's and the Wright brothers' aviation companies created what was briefly the largest aircraft manufacturer in the country. It stopped building whole aircraft decades ago, and what remains today is a components and systems supplier organized around three segments: Aerospace and Industrial, Defense Electronics, and Naval and Power. That range, air, land, sea, and nuclear power, is unusual for a company its size, and it's the result of steady acquisition and reinvestment rather than one big platform win. The Aerospace and Industrial segment covers actuation, sensors, and surface treatment. Its Actuation division builds electromechanical actuation systems for flight controls, engine controls, and landing gear on fixed-wing, rotorcraft, and unmanned platforms, while its Sensors division has spent more than 50 years supplying position, pressure, and flow sensing hardware for commercial and military aircraft alike.
Surface treatment services, largely shot peening and related processes that extend the fatigue life of metal parts, round out a niche but essential business that touches airframes well beyond Curtiss-Wright's own product lines. Defense Electronics is the segment most directly aimed at military customers. It supplies rugged embedded computing, sensor processing, and data recording hardware built to survive the vibration, heat, and shock of combat platforms, along with secure data storage and tactical data links used across fixed-wing, rotorcraft, and unmanned aerial systems. This is the part of the business that shows up on avionics buses and mission systems rather than on the airframe itself, and it has grown as militaries push more processing power and data capacity onto individual aircraft and vehicles. Naval and Power is where Curtiss-Wright's nuclear heritage lives.
It makes pumps, valves, and motors for naval nuclear propulsion, supplying both the US Navy's submarine and aircraft carrier programs and commercial nuclear plants, alongside shipboard control, automation, and aircraft-handling systems used aboard surface combatants. Steam turbine components and coating and testing services for reactor components round out a segment that, unlike most of the rest of the portfolio, deals directly in systems the Navy cannot easily source elsewhere. Across ground defense, Curtiss-Wright also supplies stabilization and actuation hardware for armored vehicle turrets and weapon systems, an extension of the same motion-control expertise the Aerospace and Industrial segment applies to aircraft. The company doesn't chase headline programs the way a prime contractor does. Instead it positions itself inside dozens of platforms across every branch of service, on the theory that being embedded in the guts of many systems is a steadier business than betting on any single one.
