Damen Shipyards Group
Family-owned Dutch shipbuilding group spanning frigates and patrol vessels, tugs and workboats, ferries, dredgers, offshore support, superyachts, ship repair and marine components.
Damen is a Dutch family shipbuilding group founded in 1927 at Hardinxveld-Giessendam by the brothers Jan and Marinus Damen and now run from Gorinchem by the third generation. It reported EUR 3.25 billion of revenue in 2025 on around 12,500 staff, delivered 160 vessels that year, and carried an order book of just over EUR 10 billion into 2026. The group operates more than 50 yards, repair yards and related companies and sells into roughly 120 countries. Its defining commercial idea is standardisation: Damen designs vessel series, builds hulls to stock and finishes them to order, which is why a customer can buy a tug or a patrol boat from inventory rather than waiting on a build slot.
Damen Naval, based at Vlissingen and formerly Royal Schelde, is the warship arm and marked 150 years there in 2025. It is the preferred supplier to the Royal Netherlands Navy and designed the Karel Doorman-class multipurpose frigates, the Holland-class offshore patrol vessels, the Enforcer family of landing platform docks that underpins Dutch, Spanish and British amphibious ships, and the Karel Doorman joint support ship. It delivered the combat support ship HNLMS Den Helder, commissioned in 2025. Its two largest current programmes are the German Navy F126 frigate, a Dutch design contracted in 2020 that has run into schedule and governance difficulties, and the Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigate programme with Thales Nederland for two Dutch and two Belgian ships, which has slipped into the 2030s. The export side sells the SIGMA modular corvette and frigate family and the Stan Patrol series of patrol vessels, which run to dozens of hulls with coast guards and navies worldwide.
The commercial ranges are much larger by unit count. Tugs dominate, with 86 of the 160 vessels delivered in 2025 falling into that category, alongside Fast Crew Suppliers, Combi Freighters, workboats, pilot and tender craft, pontoons and barges, cargo vessels, fishing and aquaculture boats, and research and science ships. Dredging is a separate line covering cutter suction and hopper dredgers. Ferries have become a visible growth area, including three Island Class vessels for BC Ferries and Frisia E-1, Germany's first fully electric ferry.
Damen Yachting, built around the Amels brand acquired in 1991, covers custom and semi-custom superyachts and explorer yachts. Damen Shiprepair and Conversion handled 1,235 projects in 2025, ranging from cruise ship refits to heavy-lift platform work. Damen Marine Components supplies rudders, steering gear and related equipment to Damen yards and external builders. Damen Services provides lifecycle support, spares, training and academy programmes, and Damen Trading deals in used and stock vessels.
The group keeps expanding by acquisition, taking the UK-based IME Group and the Norwegian yard Folla in 2025. Local partnership is a standing part of its export model, with technology transfer and local build arrangements attached to many naval sales, and Damen routinely ties naval contracts to industrial participation with local yards, suppliers and research institutes. The result is a group whose defence relevance is real but sits inside a much larger commercial maritime business, and the tug and workboat volume is what funds and staffs the naval yards between warship programmes.
