Dassault Aviation

Dassault Aviation is the company behind France's only frontline fighter jet, and it has spent nearly a century building both fast military aircraft and the business jets that keep the balance sheet healthy between fighter orders. Marcel Bloch founded the predecessor firm in 1929 as Societe des Avions Marcel Bloch, and after World War II he refounded it in 1947 as Avions Marcel Dassault, adopting the name he had used during the war. The 1971 merger with Breguet Aviation created the modern Dassault Aviation. The Dassault family, through its holding structure, still controls the firm today, with Airbus holding a reduced minority stake around 10 percent.

It trades on Euronext Paris under ticker AM and is based in Saint-Cloud, near Paris, with roughly 14,600 employees. The Rafale is the company's defining military product, a twin-engine, delta-wing multirole fighter that entered French service in the 2000s after a long development, and one that has become a genuine export success in the 2020s, with orders from India, Egypt, Qatar, Greece, Croatia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates on top of the French Air Force and Navy fleets. Earlier Dassault fighters remain in service or in memory across a long client list, including the Mirage 2000, still flown by several air forces, and the Mirage III and Mirage F1 that came before it. The Atlantique and later ATL2 maritime patrol aircraft cover long-range submarine hunting and surveillance for the French Navy, and the Alpha Jet, developed jointly with Dornier, has trained generations of French and export pilots.

On the research side, Dassault led the nEUROn program, a stealthy unmanned combat air vehicle demonstrator built with partners across five other European countries to prove out low-observable drone technology, feeding directly into Dassault's role as prime contractor for the Future Combat Air System, the Franco-German-Spanish program meant to field a sixth-generation fighter alongside Airbus and Indra sometime after 2040. The Falcon family of business jets is the company's other half, and commercially the more consistent earner. Dassault has delivered more than 2,700 Falcons since launching the line in the 1960s and 70s, moving from the original Falcon 10 through the Falcon 2000, 7X, 8X, and the newest 6X and 10X models, aircraft prized for handling and cabin comfort as much as range. Dassault also has a long-running relationship with the separately listed Dassault Systemes, the engineering software company that spun off from Dassault Aviation in 1981 and now operates independently, though it is not part of this listing.
