Data Patterns (India) Limited
Radars, test systems, avionics, EW, space and naval electronics from Chennai
Data Patterns was founded at Chennai in 1985 by Srinivasagopalan Rangarajan and spent most of its life as a quiet supplier of circuit boards and test gear before a 2021 listing turned it into one of the more closely watched Indian defence electronics names. The company describes itself as vertically integrated, running design, board fabrication, assembly, environmental qualification and system integration under one roof, and it reports a single business segment covering the manufacture, sale and service of defence electronics. Customers are mostly Bharat Electronics, Hindustan Aeronautics, ISRO and DRDO. It trades on both Indian exchanges. The 2021 offering raised about 588 crore rupees, of which 240 crore was fresh capital, and the balance sheet has stayed close to debt free since. Design, manufacture and qualification all happen at its Chennai campuses, and the products reach all four domains of space, air, land and sea.
The product catalogue is far wider than the company's size would suggest. Radar and radar subsystems run from precision approach radars, both static and transportable, through X band solid state surveillance sets, monopulse and tracking radars, short range air surveillance, an active electronically scanned array design and a navigation radar, out to a family of dual polarimetric Doppler weather radars in S, C and X bands plus VHF, L band and stratosphere troposphere wind profilers. Automatic test equipment is the other historical strength, and the ATE and test systems line includes avionics suite testers, BrahMos checkout systems, digital flight control computer testers, laser guided bomb testers, cable harness test systems, generic RF test rigs, redundant strap down inertial navigation testers, power module testers and count down test systems.
Around those two pillars sit COTS boards in VPX, VME, cPCI, FMC, XMC, PMC and VXI formats, RF and microwave assemblies, electronic warfare subsystems, digital intermediate frequency processors and waveform generators, high speed processors, identify friend and foe interrogators, cockpit and rugged displays, operator consoles, avionic systems, laser and electro optic systems, power supply units, naval systems, communication products, gimbal and actuator controllers, launch and fire control systems, navigation systems and the software and application products that tie the hardware together. Space systems form their own group, covering nano satellites, ground stations, test equipment for spacecraft and launch pad automation at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Its parts fly on the LCA Tejas, the light utility helicopter and BrahMos. That mix of board level supply, subsystem work and full system delivery is unusual for a company of this size, and it is the reason a single order can move from a few crore rupees to a programme scale contract without changing the factory. Sales have compounded at roughly a third a year over the last five years.
