
Dedrone
Airspace security across detection, tracking, identification and defeat, from city-wide sensor coverage to handheld drone jammers.
Dedrone sells airspace security, which in practice means knowing what is flying over a site and being able to do something about it. The company was founded in Kassel, Germany in February 2014 by Joerg Lamprecht, Rene Seeber and Ingo Seebach, moved its center of gravity to San Francisco in 2016, and now runs from Sterling, Virginia. Axon Enterprise, best known for Tasers and police body cameras, took a minority stake in 2022 and agreed to buy the rest in May 2024, closing that October. Dedrone still trades under its own name as an Axon business.
Detection begins with software. DedroneTracker.AI is the command and control layer, and most of what the company sells is a way of feeding it. DedroneSensors are radio frequency receivers that match a drone's control link against a library of model signatures rather than decoding telemetry, which is how the system names the aircraft type and frequently locates the operator as well. Radar, pan-tilt-zoom cameras, acoustic sensors and Remote ID broadcasts all fold into the same picture. The packaging changes with the customer. DedroneFixedSite is the permanent multi-sensor installation for an airport or a power station. DedroneCity covers a wide area without installing anything on the protected property. DedronePortable and the trailer-mounted DedroneRapidResponse handle temporary events, and DedroneOnTheMove puts the same stack on a vehicle.
Mitigation is the other half, and it is where the US federal work sits. Dedrone bought the DroneDefender product line and its intellectual property from Battelle in October 2019 and built Dedrone Defense around it. DedroneDefender 2 is the descendant of that purchase, a directional radio frequency jammer designed to be usable in built-up areas. DedroneTactical is a later modular mast kit pairing RF detect and defeat with cameras and radar for expeditionary use, with more than a hundred kits reported sold to government users. The company also acquired Aerial Armor of Phoenix in January 2023, largely for its installed sensor base and the operating data behind it.
A third line points the opposite way. DedroneBeyond supports drone as first responder programs, where a public safety agency launches its own aircraft to a call ahead of a patrol unit. That is the part of the portfolio that most obviously explains why Axon wanted the company.
Customers run across airports, correctional facilities, stadiums, utilities, data centers, military installations, enterprise campuses and VIP protection. Dedrone reports coverage of more than 800 sites in over 30 countries, including dozens of airports and stadiums, with users spanning multiple G7 governments and a long list of US federal entities. Its record with regulators is unusual for the sector. In 2019 it became the first counter-drone technology formally approved by the UK Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, and in April 2024 the first counter-drone company granted SAFETY Act designation by the US Department of Homeland Security. Its earliest public demonstration was blunt: in 2015 the system logged 52 unauthorized drone flights over military facilities in Washington DC in 26 days.
