Denchi Group
Ruggedised defence batteries and chargers, custom industrial packs, containerised energy storage and mining safety lighting.
Denchi Group works out of Thurso in the far north of Scotland, which is an odd place for a battery house until you know the history. The site grew up alongside the Dounreay nuclear research establishment, and the company's technical lineage runs through the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, whose sponsored research produced the lithium cobalt oxide chemistry that Sony later commercialised. The commercial arm became AEA Technology, which acquired DSB Special Batteries and rebranded the operation ABSL Power Solutions. After a private equity sale in the mid 2000s and the disposal of the space side to EnerSys, the defence division was bought by private investors and renamed Denchi Power in 2014. In 2016 Denchi picked up the Oldham mining lamp business, itself founded in 1865, which is how a defence battery firm ended up owning a Victorian lighting brand.
The company now runs four market divisions. Denchi Defence is the largest and covers three application groups. Dismounted soldier batteries provide power for radios, night vision and auxiliary equipment, with the BB2590 Smart Battery as the mainstay and the Soldier Portable Charger for field replenishment. Military vehicle batteries centre on a lithium-ion 6T pack, sold on stealth grounds as much as energy density because a lithium pack supports silent watch far longer than the lead-acid unit it replaces. The third group is unmanned systems, covering packs for land, surface and air platforms where weight and cycle life dominate the specification. On the primary side the M1 family uses lithium thionyl chloride for single-use applications with long dormant storage.
Denchi Commercial and Industrial does custom pack design and build for medical devices, rail, marine and industrial equipment makers, and will work either full-service from a blank sheet or build to print from a customer's existing design. It also holds stock of primary and rechargeable cells across chemistries and runs buffer arrangements for customers who need supply continuity rather than engineering.
Denchi Energy Storage sells the SLICE range. SLICE Industrial is a scalable lithium-ion system for commercial and industrial sites looking to shift load and cut electricity bills, quoted at 15,000 cycles through life with a ten year warranty. SLICE Grid is the containerised large-scale version, used for renewables smoothing, frequency response, capacity market participation and TRIAD charge avoidance.
Denchi Mining carries the Oldham brand of intrinsically safe caplamps and safety lighting for underground work, including the DL16 corded caplamp. The mining and defence sides share the same manufacturing and test infrastructure in Thurso.
Across all four divisions the company works in lithium-ion in its nickel cobalt aluminium, nickel manganese cobalt and lithium iron phosphate variants, plus nickel metal hydride, nickel cadmium, lead acid, lithium manganese dioxide, lithium thionyl chloride, alkaline and silver oxide. Customers named on the company's own pages include BAE Systems, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Leonardo and the UK Ministry of Defence. It is a small firm, on the order of seventy staff, competing on engineering depth rather than scale.
