Denel is South Africa's state-owned defense manufacturer, formed in 1992 when Armscor, the country's defense procurement agency, spun off its manufacturing arms so Armscor could focus purely on acquisition while Denel took over production. At its founding, Denel inherited a broad, apartheid-era defense-industrial base that had been built up under international arms embargoes, and it still carries that legacy today across four main divisions: Aerospace, Landward Systems, Dynamics, and Integrated Systems Solutions. The Aerospace division, based around facilities at Kempton Park and the Overberg Test Range, is best known for the Rooivalk attack helicopter, a locally developed gunship that remains one of the few combat helicopters designed and built on the African continent, and it also handles aircraft maintenance and testing work. Landward Systems, built on the old Lyttelton Engineering Works and Pretoria Metal Pressings sites, produces artillery, most notably the G5 towed howitzer and G6 self-propelled howitzer, long-range guns that established South Africa's reputation in extended-range artillery design, along with armored vehicle turrets and small-caliber ammunition.

Denel Dynamics, based in Irene outside Pretoria, is the missile and unmanned systems arm, developing the Umkhonto family of naval and ground-based air defense missiles, the A-Darter short-range air-to-air missile developed jointly with Brazil, the Ingwe anti-tank guided missile, and the Seeker family of tactical unmanned aerial systems used for reconnaissance. Integrated Systems Solutions covers command and control software and systems integration work that ties the other divisions' hardware together for South African and export customers. Denel has also held joint-venture stakes in European partners, including a minority position in Rheinmetall Denel Munition, a South African ammunition joint venture with the German group, and a smaller historical stake tied to Hensoldt's optronics lineage. The company's story since roughly 2015 has been dominated by financial crisis rather than new products.

A widely criticized 2016 procurement arrangement with a Gupta family-linked supplier is estimated to have cost Denel billions of rand in lost revenue and damaged relationships with international partners, and by the early 2020s the company was effectively unable to pay salaries for extended stretches, surviving on government bailouts and restructuring plans while headcount fell from a peak well above ten thousand to a few thousand employees. A turnaround effort launched in the mid-2020s has focused on paying down debt, restoring export credibility, and pursuing a reported multi-billion-rand order pipeline covering missile systems, unmanned aircraft, and artillery for African and Middle Eastern customers, though the company remains a smaller and financially fragile version of the diversified aerospace and defense manufacturer it once was.
