The Dewey Electronics Corporation

Military tactical generator sets, flex-fuel portable power, hybrid energy systems, naval speed logs and aircraft ground support hardware.

//Overview

Dewey Electronics has been in Oakland, New Jersey since 1955, when it was founded as a research and development house serving the US Navy and Air Force. It is small, closely held and publicly quoted on the over-the-counter market under the ticker DEWY, having deregistered from SEC reporting in 2017. John Dewey took over as chief executive after the founder died in 2002. The company grew by absorbing other niche defence suppliers rather than by scaling one product: Pitometer Log Corporation brought naval speed and distance measurement, Avion Electronics brought radar and microwave work, Goodman Ball added aircraft ground support and airframe hardware, and INI Power Systems was acquired in 2021.

The defining product is the 2 kilowatt Military Tactical Generator. Dewey has supplied it to the Department of Defense programme office for Mobile Electric Power since 1996 and has fielded more than 25,000 units to the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force, all supported with a full logistics package in the DoD inventory. Two variants cover the standard requirement. The MEP-531A delivers 2 kilowatts of 120V alternating current, and the MEP-501A delivers 2 kilowatts of 28V direct current in a 148 pound package with four hours of fuel on board. Both are skid-mounted self-contained sets with a diesel engine, direct drive alternator, speed governing, fuel system, cold weather starting below minus five degrees Celsius and a generator control system.

The INI Power acquisition brought a different approach to portable power. Those products are one-man-portable flex-fuel generators running from 500 watts to 5 kilowatts, sold in 5 kilowatt and 2.2 kilowatt families with custom variants and accessories. Flex-fuel matters in expeditionary use because it removes the requirement to move a second fuel type into a site that already has diesel or JP-8.

Beyond individual sets, Dewey builds hybrid power generation systems that pair a generator with energy storage so the engine can shut down under low load, and vehicle auxiliary power units that let a platform run its electrical loads without idling the main engine. Both address the same operational problem, which is that military generators historically spend most of their lives running well below rated output and burning fuel to do it.

The non-power side is smaller but still active. The Pitometer Log division has been in ship speed and distance measurement since 1927 and supplies electromagnetic logs to the US Navy and foreign navies for surface and sub-surface use. The former Goodman Ball line covers power and hand pumps, airframe structural components and aircraft air conditioning, heating and pressurisation hardware, including Boeing pumps, coalescers, water separators, couplers, MS adapters, valves and roller conveyor equipment used on the F-15, T-38, C-5 and C-130 by the Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard.

Around all of that Dewey sells the underlying capability directly: machining, contract manufacturing, power systems integration, and engineering and development work. It holds ISO 9001 certification and supplier approvals from Raytheon and Boeing, and it supports its own fielded equipment with spares and repair services.
