DroneShield started in 2014 when Brian Hearing and John Franklin, both working in defense research at the time, set out to build a way of telling the difference between a hobbyist drone and a genuine threat before it got close enough to matter. Based in Sydney with additional operations in Virginia and the Netherlands, the company has grown into one of the more prominent pure-play counter-drone firms and now trades on the Australian Securities Exchange, where by 2024 it had become Australia's most valuable listed defense company by market capitalization. The company's approach rests on layering radio frequency sensing, artificial intelligence, and electronic warfare across detection and defeat, and it sells that combination through several distinct hardware lines rather than one flagship device. RfPatrol is a body-worn detection unit that lets a single soldier or officer sense nearby drones without carrying separate equipment.

DroneGun, in its Mk4 and Tactical variants, is a rifle-shaped jammer that an operator points at a drone to sever its control and navigation link and force it down or back to its operator. DroneSentry-X is the vehicle-mountable version of that same defeat capability, built for convoys and mobile units, while the fixed DroneSentry system protects a static site such as a prison, airport, or military base around the clock. Software ties the hardware together. DroneSentry-C2, sold in Enterprise and Tactical versions, is the command and control layer that fuses sensor data from DroneShield's own hardware and third-party sensors into a single operating picture, and SentryCiv extends that picture for civilian airspace integration.

DroneOptID adds camera-based visual identification to confirm what a radio frequency sensor has already flagged, and RfLink handles the communications backbone tying distributed sensors together. For rapid deployment, the company packages hardware into an Immediate Response Kit for smaller units and an Expeditionary Fixed Site kit for standing up protection at a new location quickly. DroneShield says it has sold more than 4,000 units through a network of roughly 74 in-country partners, serving more than 30 government agencies and defense forces worldwide, with particular attention from military, law enforcement, and critical infrastructure customers who all face the same basic problem of cheap, hard-to-detect drones showing up somewhere they should not be. The war in Ukraine and the broader proliferation of small attack and surveillance drones have pushed counter-UAS spending up sharply across NATO and allied militaries, and DroneShield has positioned its detect-and-defeat product line, spanning man-portable, vehicle-mounted, and fixed-site configurations, to compete for that growing budget alongside larger defense primes now entering the same market.
