Ducommun Incorporated

Ducommun's history stretches back further than any other company in this batch, and further than nearly any manufacturer in the country. Charles Louis Ducommun, a French immigrant watchmaker, founded the business in Los Angeles in 1849, and it evolved over more than a century and a half from a watch and general store into a hardware and metals distribution business before pivoting toward aerospace manufacturing in the mid-20th century. That long runway has made Ducommun one of the oldest continuously operating companies in California, even though almost nothing about its current business resembles its origins. Today Ducommun organizes around two segments: Electronic Systems and Structural Systems.

Electronic Systems covers circuit board solutions, interconnect solutions, and integrated box-build manufacturing, essentially the printed circuit assemblies and electronic packaging that go inside larger aerospace and defense systems rather than standalone end products. Structural Systems handles the metalworking side of the business: assembly, bonding, chemical milling, forming, and machining of airframe structures, along with proprietary composite manufacturing technology the company markets under its VersaCore name. A smaller Engineered Products line adds RF solutions, motors and resolvers, human-machine interface hardware, certified thermoplastics, and lightning diversion systems, along with acquired specialty brands including Nobles Worldwide, MAGSEAL, and BLR Aerospace. Ducommun's manufacturing footprint spans 15 centers across ten US states plus Mexico, and its structural work appears on both commercial and military platforms.

On the commercial side, the company supplies structural components for the Boeing 737 and 787 and the Airbus A320 and A220 families, embedding it in the same high-volume commercial production programs that many of its aerospace-supplier peers depend on. On the defense side, Ducommun has been recognized specifically for its supply of vertical launch system hardware to BAE Systems, and the company more broadly describes its structural and electronic manufacturing as serving fighter jets and helicopters alongside its commercial aircraft work, though it discloses fewer named military platforms publicly than some of its larger peers. Under CEO Stephen Oswald, who has led the company since 2017, Ducommun has pursued a deliberate strategy of sharpening its focus on aerospace and defense manufacturing, completing five acquisitions in his first five years to build out both segments. That combination of a genuinely ancient corporate history and a much more recent, acquisition-driven strategic focus is part of what makes Ducommun distinctive among aerostructures suppliers, a 175-year-old company competing today on the strength of a strategy barely a decade old.
