Elettronica S.p.A. (ELT Group)

Electronic warfare across air, sea, land, space and cyber

//Overview

Elettronica has worked the electromagnetic spectrum from the same Rome site on Via Tiburtina since the early 1970s, and it is one of the few European electronic warfare houses still standing outside a large prime. Filippo Fratalocchi founded the firm in 1951. It rebranded as ELT Group in 2023 and now organises itself around five domains, namely defense, cyber, biodefense, space and global sustainment. Ownership is unusual for the sector. Thales holds about a third of the shares and Leonardo just under a third, both as minority investors, with the Benigni family holding company owning the balance and the family still running the business day to day. Headcount rose from 800 to 1,230 over five years, orders reached 700 million euros in 2025 against 470 million the year before, and research spending climbed to roughly 70 million euros.

Defense remains the core. The Virgilius architecture is the modular spine of the airborne line, detecting, classifying and identifying emitters while countering anti-aircraft artillery radars, surface-to-air and air-to-air missile seekers, early warning sets and modern multifunction radars. Below it sit the ELT/160 family of radar warning receivers and the fully digital ELT/162, which samples radio frequency directly and applies machine learning to sort crowded signal environments. Countermeasures split two ways. The ELT/572 is a fibre laser directed infrared countermeasure picked by the Italian Air Force to protect Hercules transports against shoulder-launched missiles, and the ELT/577 is its solid state sibling. The ELT/590, nicknamed Spark, packs digital radio frequency memory jamming into the shape of a standard flare so it fires from an ordinary 812 dispenser. At sea the ZEUS suite, derived from Virgilius, pairs radar and communications electronic support with gallium nitride solid state jamming for blue water and littoral operations. The company also contributes to Praetorian, the defensive aids subsystem carried by the Eurofighter Typhoon, through the EuroDASS consortium.

The other domains grew out of that base. CY4GATE, listed separately in Milan, covers cyber intelligence, cyber security and the point where electronic warfare and cyber operations meet. E4Life applies the group's engineering to biodefense. Solynx Corporation, bought in January 2024 and based in New Hampshire, scouts technology in the United States. Space arrived with Scorpio, an electronic intelligence payload already flying in low Earth orbit and collecting test data. Global sustainment wraps around the rest, covering in-service support, upgrades, obsolescence work and training for more than 3,000 systems delivered to around 30 countries. Elettronica GmbH in Germany designs signal processing and homeland security products. New offices opened in 2025 in the United Kingdom, Qatar and Indonesia, and the group won seven European Defence Fund calls along with European Space Agency contracts in the same year while its supplier base widened from about 350 vendors to 760.
