EOS GmbH Electro Optical Systems

Family-owned German maker of industrial metal and polymer laser powder bed fusion systems, qualified powders, process software and application engineering.

//Overview

EOS was founded in Krailling, just outside Munich, on 24 April 1989 by Hans J. Langer and Hans Steinbichler, with the idea of building solid parts directly from CAD data using lasers. More than thirty-five years later it is still owned by the founding family rather than by a listed parent or a fund, which is unusual in an industry that has consolidated hard. Around 1,350 people work for the group across roughly 15 countries, and the installed base runs to several thousand industrial machines.

The company runs two parallel platform families. On the metal side it builds laser powder bed fusion systems. The M 290 family became the workhorse of qualified aerospace metal printing, and it is joined by the four-laser M 300-4 and M 400-4, the larger M 400, and the M4 ONYX, which uses six 400 watt lasers to push build rates toward genuine series production. The polymer side is laser sintering, covering the compact FORMIGA P 110 Velocis, the P3 NEXT, the INTEGRA P 450, and the larger P 500 and P 770 frames. Both families have Fine Detail Resolution variants that trade build volume for the ability to resolve very small features, which matters for connectors, ducting and lattice structures.

Materials are treated as part of the product rather than a commodity. EOS qualifies and sells its own aluminum, titanium, nickel alloy, cobalt chrome, copper, stainless, tool steel and other metal powders, plus a polymer range spanning multipurpose, ductile, flexible, flame retardant, high performance and biocompatible grades. Process software such as Smart Fusion manages heat in real time and reduces the amount of support structure a part needs. Around all of it sit the Metal and Polymer Enablement programs, in which EOS engineers work with a customer to qualify one specific part rather than simply ship a machine.

AMCM, an EOS company, exists for the jobs the catalogue machines cannot do. It builds customised platforms derived from EOS frames, including the M 290 FLX with variable spot nLIGHT lasers, the M 290-2 in 1 kW and fine detail versions, the larger M 450 and M 4K, and the M 8K, developed to print the combustion chamber for the ArianeGroup Prometheus rocket engine. That line is where most of the rocket and large-format work sits, and the first M 8K went to a US aerospace and defense manufacturing group.

Defense is one of nine industries EOS names on its own site, alongside automotive, aviation, consumer goods, energy, general manufacturing, medical, semiconductors and space. The argument it makes there is specific rather than general: fast prototyping of new equipment, lightweight structures for vehicles and drones, low-volume high-complexity parts that are uneconomic to machine, and spare parts printed near the point of need to shorten a supply chain. EOS points to an exterior component printed on its equipment that flew on a Saab Gripen after airworthiness testing. It is worth being clear about the boundary. EOS sells the machines, powders and process knowledge that defense and aerospace suppliers use. It does not build weapons or integrate systems itself.
