ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH
Defence software, mission systems, counter-drone C2 and fleet logistics
ESG was set up in Munich in 1967 by a group of German electronics firms to build the avionics and ground support the young Luftwaffe needed for aircraft like the F-104G Starfighter. It has stayed a platform-independent systems house ever since, writing software and integrating other people's hardware rather than making weapons of its own. Around 1,400 people work for it, mostly at Fuerstenfeldbruck west of Munich and across a dozen German sites from Kiel and Nordholz to Koblenz and Bonn, with smaller operations in the Netherlands and the United States. Revenue was about 330 million euros in 2023. Armira, a Munich investment firm, owned the company from 2015 until Hensoldt bought all of it at an enterprise value of 675 million euros plus an earn-out, completing on 2 April 2024. Hensoldt has since folded ESG into a Multi Domain Solutions division, put the Fuerstenfeldbruck site under its own name and rebadged several products, so the ESG brand is being wound down even though the GmbH still exists.
The work divides across air, land, sea, cyber and joint domains. Command and control is the visible half. The TARANIS suite covers three levels, with TARANIS Theatre for stationary and mobile command posts at higher formations, TARANIS Battlefield for tactical headquarters and vehicles, and TARANIS Soldier running on tablets and handsets for dismounted troops. The German artillery's fire control network, ADLER, came from the same house, and ADLER III was built on the TARANIS Battlefield baseline. HEROS is the mobile command and information system written to NATO Response Force requirements. ELYSION is the counter-drone command software, a development of the earlier Guardion core, now used by police in North Rhine-Westphalia. ESG also produced the digital fire control system for the Gepard anti-aircraft tank.
The logistics and documentation side is less visible and probably more durable. N-CORE is the NATO codification and cataloguing repository used by governments under ACodP-1, QuILS authors and displays interactive technical publications to S1000D, and APART does the same job to the S2000M standard for materiel maintenance. Around those sit the engineering services that make up most of the headcount: system and software development, integration, simulation, test, avionics work, maintenance and repair management, IT services, cyber security and spare parts logistics for the German procurement office. On programmes, ESG is prime contractor for ASUL, the Bundeswehr counter-drone system, carrying responsibility for the whole system with Diehl Defence and Rohde & Schwarz as partners and delivering five container-based sets, first used at the 2022 G7 summit at Elmau. It developed Tornado avionics with British and Italian partners in the 1970s, supports German military helicopter fleets through a joint centre at Donauwoerth, and Hensoldt named the Future Combat Air System and Germany's F-35 buy as reasons for acquiring it.
