Exail Technologies
Naval robotics, inertial navigation, and photonics for defense and civil operators.
Exail is a fairly young name for a company built from much older pieces. It was formed in 2022 when ECA Group, a robotics and unmanned systems maker tracing back to a Toulon aeronautics firm founded in 1936, merged with iXblue, a navigation and photonics specialist founded in 2000. Both were part of the French industrial group Groupe Gorgé, which had owned ECA for decades and acquired iXblue shortly before the merger, and the family-controlled Gorgé remains Exail's majority owner. The combined company is headquartered in La Garde, in southern France, and employs roughly 2,000 people across some 30 sites in more than 80 countries. The clearest thread running through Exail's business is maritime robotics, particularly mine countermeasures.
Its Inspector line of unmanned surface vessels, including the Inspector 125, handles the deployment and recovery of underwater drones used to find and neutralize sea mines, while autonomous underwater vehicles like the A18-M carry sonar and other payloads to search large areas of seabed, up to 40 square kilometers per mission, without putting divers or crewed ships at risk. These systems come together in UMIS, Exail's integrated mine countermeasure package, which the company has supplied or is supplying to navies including the Belgian and Dutch fleets under a joint replacement program, and to the French Navy's SLAMF program in partnership with Thales. Underneath the robotics sits Exail's navigation business, which is really where the company's technical depth comes from. Its inertial navigation systems and fiber-optic gyroscopes are used by more than 50 naval forces worldwide, and the same navigation technology feeds into its own unmanned vehicles as well as third-party platforms, including systems built to keep working accurately in GNSS-denied environments where GPS jamming or spoofing is a factor. A separate photonics and aerospace line covers optical components and laser systems, with early work extending into quantum sensors and satellite applications, an area Exail has flagged as a longer-term growth bet rather than a mature product line today.
About 56 percent of Exail's revenue comes from defense customers, with the rest split across civil maritime, oil and gas, and scientific survey work, which keeps the company more diversified than a pure defense contractor. It listed on Euronext Paris and joined the SBF 120 index in 2025 as its order backlog crossed a billion euros. In 2026 Thales moved to acquire Exail outright, aiming to combine Exail's mine warfare and seabed robotics with its own naval systems business, a deal that if completed would fold Exail into a much larger French defense group rather than leaving it as an independent mid-sized supplier.
