Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited

Warships, ferries, portable steel bridges, deck machinery and marine diesels

//Overview

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers started in 1884 as a small river steam workshop on the bank of the Hooghly, and it now runs one of the busiest warship yards in India. The Kolkata company sits under the Ministry of Defence, holds Miniratna status, and its shares trade on both the National Stock Exchange and the BSE. It was the first Indian yard to deliver 100 warships, a count reached in 2021 and pushed past that mark since across the Navy, the Coast Guard and other government customers. Across 63 years of naval work the yard has handed over 108 warships and patrol vessels, and a proposal to lift it from Miniratna to Navratna status went to the government in January 2026. Around 1,600 people work there. The in-house design office draws its own hulls and systems, which is why so many of the classes leaving the yard carry Indian rather than licensed lineage.

Shipbuilding carries the order book. GRSE handed Himgiri over to the Navy in July 2025, the first of its Project 17A Nilgiri class stealth frigates, and Dunagiri followed, while the eight ship Arnala class of anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft and the large Sandhayak class survey vessels moved through the yard on parallel schedules. Next generation offshore patrol vessels, landing craft utility ships, inshore and fast patrol vessels, fast interceptor boats and ocean going tugs fill out the defence side of the list. Commercial construction runs to advanced dredgers, multi purpose cargo vessels ordered by European owners, fleet replenishment tankers, ocean research vessels and the hybrid and fully electric ferries now entering service on inland routes in West Bengal. Ship repairs form a business of their own, strengthened by the acquisition of the neighbouring Rajabagan Dockyard, and they cover refits and dry docking for the Navy, the Coast Guard and commercial operators working the eastern seaboard. The order book runs deep enough that hulls are laid in series rather than one at a time, which is a change from how the yard worked through the 1990s.

The engineering division is the part outside observers usually miss. Two units in Kolkata, at 61 Park and Taratala, build prefabricated portable steel bridges of the Bailey type, deck machinery including winches, capstans and steering gear, and marine pumps. More than 5,300 of those bridges have gone to the Indian Army, the Border Roads Organisation and state public works departments, with exports to Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, and a large share of them end up carrying civilian traffic after floods and landslides rather than serving any tactical purpose. A separate engine plant on 62 acres at Ranchi assembles, tests and overhauls marine propulsion diesels under a licence agreement with MTU of Germany, covering the 4000 series units that power a good deal of the Indian fleet, along with selected engine components made in house. Newer lines include autonomous underwater vehicles, unmanned surface vessels and a 30 mm naval surface gun mount. Four businesses, one river.
