GM Defense is General Motors' way of selling Detroit's volume manufacturing to the Pentagon without pretending to be a traditional prime. The name has history. GM's original defense arm dates to 1950 and was sold to General Dynamics in 2003, so when the company re-entered the market in 2017 it was restarting rather than beginning. The unit is led by Steve duMont and operates from Washington, DC with its manufacturing and customer innovation centre in Concord, North Carolina. Headcount there is small by defense standards, a few dozen people building vehicles in a converted warehouse, because the real engineering weight sits at GM's Milford proving ground and in the commercial supply base behind it. The first Infantry Squad Vehicles were designed at Milford and about thirty GM staff in Concord had built roughly 750 of them by April 2026. GM expects defense revenue near $700 million in 2026 and is targeting positive operating results while growing backlog.
The programme that made the unit is the Infantry Squad Vehicle, designated M1301 and derived from the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. It carries a nine-soldier squad, weighs under 5,000 pounds so it can be sling-loaded or air dropped, and runs a 2.8 litre Duramax turbo diesel making 275 horsepower. Around 90 percent of its content is commercial off the shelf, which is the entire argument for buying it. Deliveries passed 900 vehicles by late 2025 against an Army acquisition objective above 9,000, Canada ordered 90 in 2024, and a five-seat utility variant with a cargo bed, the ISV-U, entered procurement for fiscal 2026. The Army then asked for something heavier and hybrid, and in June 2026 awarded GM Defense one of three other transaction agreements for ISV-H prototypes alongside Ford and BC Customs, with first deliveries due by March 2027.
The second line is protected mobility for diplomats rather than soldiers. Suburban Shield is GM Defense's answer to the State Department's heavy duty armored SUV requirement, a Suburban built from the start as an armored vehicle with its own body-on-frame chassis and suspension rated for the added mass, first production vehicles completed in 2024 under a development contract worth $36.4 million and now also going to Qatar's armed forces and special forces command. Advanced propulsion is the third strand. GM's Hydrotec hydrogen fuel cell technology is offered for silent watch and silent mobility, where a unit wants to sit or move without engine noise, exhaust plume or thermal signature, and the same stacks have been applied to Navy uncrewed underwater vehicle propulsion. Battery electric variants of the squad vehicle have been shown as concepts. Sustainment, fielding support and training for the delivered fleets round out what the unit sells, and the export side has grown with the Canadian and Qatari orders. What GM Defense is really offering the government is the cost curve of an automaker, and whether that holds up once requirements harden into military specifications is the question every one of these programs is quietly testing.
