Hanwha Aerospace

Hanwha Aerospace is easy to undersell if you only look at one of its businesses, and its own history is part of the reason. The company began in 1977 as Samsung Precision, a jet engine component maker, and passed through Samsung Techwin ownership before Hanwha Group acquired it in 2015 and eventually renamed it Hanwha Aerospace. What Hanwha Group has built on that foundation since is a genuine five-sector operation, not a single-product exporter with a marketing department. The aerospace and aviation-engine business is where the company started and remains a real strength: Hanwha manufactures gas turbine engine components and provides maintenance services under long-running partnerships with Pratt & Whitney, GE, and Rolls-Royce, work serious enough that Rolls-Royce gave the company its Trusted to Deliver Excellence award.

The space business has grown from that engine expertise into launch vehicle propulsion, satellites, and ground systems, positioning Hanwha as South Korea's leading private-sector space contractor alongside the state space program. The defense business is the most internationally visible piece and the one that built Hanwha's reputation abroad, anchored by the K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer, now in service or on order across more than half a dozen countries including Poland, Australia, Egypt, and Norway, alongside the K10 ammunition resupply vehicle that reloads it. The same land systems business builds the K21 infantry fighting vehicle and its export variant, the AS-21 Redback, developed specifically for Australia's armored vehicle competition, the K239 Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher, and a growing line of unmanned ground systems. Naval work runs through Hanwha Ocean, the former Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering that Hanwha Group acquired a controlling stake in during 2023, which builds the KSS-III (Dosan Ahn Changho-class) diesel-electric attack submarines for the South Korean Navy and has pursued export submarine and surface ship deals with countries including Poland and, more recently, Canada.

The fifth sector, mechatronics and precision machinery, is the least defense-flavored but genuinely large: Hanwha Precision Machinery and Hanwha Semitech supply surface-mount technology equipment, semiconductor manufacturing equipment including chip bonders and front-end process tools, industrial robots, and factory automation systems to electronics manufacturers worldwide, a business with roots in producing South Korea's first chip mounter back in 1989. Treating any single one of these, most often the artillery and armored vehicle business, as the whole company misses most of what Hanwha Aerospace actually does and how it makes money. The company is listed on the Korea Exchange, majority-controlled by Hanwha Group, and has been expanding its workforce and manufacturing footprint rapidly as export orders for its land systems have grown, including a new smart factory investment in Changwon aimed at scaling production.
