HawkEye 360

HawkEye 360 is a Herndon, Virginia company that built its business around a fairly narrow but valuable idea: put small satellites in orbit specifically to detect and geolocate radio frequency emissions from the ground, at sea, and in the air, then sell that data and analysis to government and commercial customers who need to know where a signal is coming from without anyone on the ground knowing they are being watched. The company was founded in September 2015 by Chris DeMay, Charles Clancy, and Bob McGwier, three engineers with backgrounds spanning signals processing, academic research, and national security work, and it launched its first cluster of satellites in December 2018. Unlike most commercial space companies that focus on imagery, HawkEye 360 built its constellation around radio frequency geolocation, flying satellites in tight clusters of three so that small differences in when each satellite receives the same signal can be used to triangulate its source on the ground.

That constellation has grown steadily, with roughly a dozen clusters and more than three dozen individual Hawk satellites in orbit as of 2025, along with an experimental satellite called Kestrel and additional spectrum-monitoring satellites the company acquired from Maxar Intelligence to expand its sensing capacity. The company's flagship data product, RFGeo, launched in 2019 and lets customers identify, locate, and analyze radio frequency signals of interest, whether that is a ship running with its transponder switched off, an illegal fishing vessel operating outside its permitted zone, jamming activity near a contested border, or emergency beacon signals during a disaster response. Maritime domain awareness has become one of HawkEye 360's largest use cases, since RF detection can spot vessels that have deliberately gone dark to avoid satellite imagery or automatic identification tracking, a capability that has drawn interest from navies and coast guards worldwide trying to track illegal fishing, sanctions evasion, and gray-zone maritime activity.

National security customers use the same underlying data for signals intelligence and electronic warfare support, while telecommunications companies and regulators use it for spectrum monitoring and interference detection. HawkEye 360 has raised more than 375 million dollars in venture funding across multiple rounds, with investors including strategic backers like Lockheed Martin alongside traditional venture capital firms, funding that has gone toward expanding the satellite constellation and building out the ground processing and analytics software that turns raw RF detections into usable intelligence products. The company remains privately held, employing roughly 150 to 200 people, and has positioned itself as one of the more established names in the small but growing category of commercial space-based signals intelligence, distinct from the imagery-focused satellite companies that dominate most public conversation about commercial space.
