HEICO Corporation

HEICO started out nowhere near aerospace. Founded in 1957 as Heinicke Instruments, it made laboratory equipment before a 1974 acquisition of Jet Avion Corporation redirected the company toward aviation. Under the Mendelson family, who took control in the early 1990s, HEICO built its growth model around a steady stream of acquisitions, more than 90 of them since, that folded specialist aerospace, defense, and electronics suppliers into two segments: the Flight Support Group and the Electronic Technologies Group. That acquisition-driven structure is why HEICO's offerings look less like a single product line and more like a federation of niche businesses under one roof. The Flight Support Group is the larger and older of the two, and its core business is FAA-approved replacement parts, sold under Parts Manufacturer Approval, that let airlines and MRO shops replace original-equipment parts with HEICO-made equivalents at lower cost. That parts business sits alongside repair and overhaul services, aircraft parts distribution, avionics repair, and asset management.

A dedicated Defense Sustainment line supplies critical components to the US military, extending the same replacement-parts logic that built HEICO's commercial aftermarket business into government sustainment work, where keeping older fleets flying affordably matters as much as it does for airlines. Lufthansa Technik has held a minority stake in the Flight Support Group since 1997, a long-running partnership that reflects how central the segment is to global MRO supply chains. The Electronic Technologies Group takes HEICO in a different direction, into electrically and electro-optically engineered products for aircraft, spacecraft, medical devices, and defense systems. Its Data and Microwave business includes microwave latching ferrite switches used in radar and communications systems. Its Electrical business supplies hybrid DC-to-DC converters, power supplies, amplifiers, and high-voltage cable assemblies. And its Electro-Optical business makes infrared cameras and laser rangefinder receiver components, hardware that shows up in targeting and surveillance systems as much as in commercial sensing applications.

The group also produces memory modules, digital data recorders, and ruggedized connectors and shielding built to survive harsh aerospace and defense environments. HEICO's 2023 acquisition of Wencor Group added further depth to both segments, particularly in distribution and repair capabilities. The company doesn't design or build whole aircraft or weapon systems, and it isn't trying to. Its business model depends on being the lower-cost, FAA-approved alternative for parts airlines and militaries already need, and the electronics supplier whose components disappear into someone else's larger system, a strategy that has made it one of the more consistently profitable names in aerospace supply.
