Hensoldt

Hensoldt is a relatively young corporate name, formed in 2017, but the businesses inside it are considerably older, having been carved out of Airbus's defense electronics division after private equity firm KKR bought the unit. The company took its name from Moritz Hensoldt, a 19th-century German optics pioneer, a nod to the fact that Hensoldt's roots run through some of Europe's longest-running precision optics and radar engineering. It listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2020, and its ownership today reflects how seriously European governments now treat sensor technology as strategic: the German federal government holds just over a quarter of the company directly, a stake it bought specifically to keep Hensoldt's radar and electronic warfare expertise under domestic influence, while Italian defense group Leonardo holds a similar-sized stake of its own, making Hensoldt something of a joint Franco-German-Italian strategic asset even though it operates as an independent, separately listed company. The core of the business is radar.

Hensoldt's TRML-3D and TRML-4D active electronically scanned array radars detect and track everything from aircraft to cruise missiles to small drones, and the TRML-4D in particular has become one of the most in-demand air defense radars in Europe, with Germany, Latvia, Slovenia, and Ukraine all fielding or receiving systems in the past few years as air defense spending has surged following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The company's SPEXER radar family covers shorter-range ground, sea, and low-altitude air surveillance, and Twinvis, a passive radar that detects aircraft by listening for reflections of ordinary radio and television broadcast signals rather than emitting its own signal, gives Hensoldt a genuinely distinctive niche product that is difficult for an adversary to jam or geolocate since it never transmits. Optronics is the company's second major pillar and its most direct link to the old Airbus and Zeiss optical heritage, covering thermal imaging, daylight cameras, and laser rangefinders fitted to tanks, aircraft, and dismounted soldiers, along with vehicle protection systems like the MUSS countermeasure suite and the SETAS see-through-armor situational awareness system for armored vehicle crews. Avionics rounds out a third segment, supplying pilot assistance systems, flight data recorders, and air traffic management technology, including work managing parts of the German air force's air traffic control network.

A fourth capability, electronic warfare, runs through much of the rest of the portfolio rather than standing entirely alone, covering jamming and self-protection systems for aircraft and vehicles. Hensoldt has grown through acquisition as well as organic sales, adding Kelvin Hughes and EuroAvionics in 2017 and ESG Elektroniksystem in 2023, and it employs several thousand people across German and other European sites, with radar in particular becoming its fastest-growing product line as NATO members rebuild air defense stocks.
