Hexcel makes the raw material that modern aircraft and spacecraft structures are built from. It started life in 1948 as California Reinforced Plastics, took its present name from the honeycomb core it pioneered, and now runs 18 manufacturing sites with roughly 5,800 employees and about 1.89 billion dollars in 2025 sales. It is listed on the New York Stock Exchange as HXL and reports through two segments, Composite Materials and Engineered Products.
The product families are unusually well defined for a materials company. HexTow is the continuous carbon fibre line, including intermediate modulus IM7 and high modulus HM63 grades. HexPly covers prepregs in epoxy and bismaleimide systems, with HexFlow infusion resins for liquid moulding routes. HexWeb is the honeycomb business, in aluminum and non-metallic forms, extended into machined and shaped engineered core. HexForce, HiTape and HiMax cover woven and non-crimp reinforcements in carbon, glass and aramid. HexBond spans film adhesives, foaming films, primers and pastes. HexTool is a machinable tooling material for composite moulds. Hexcel says it is the largest producer of aerospace carbon fibre in the world and supplies Airbus with more than 80 percent of its carbon fibre, along with fan blade material for the CFM LEAP engine through Safran.
The defense and space side is broad rather than concentrated. Hexcel names over 100 programs, and rotorcraft alone accounts for roughly 40 percent of that revenue. Fixed wing work covers the F-35, F/A-18E/F, Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale, A400M, KC-46 Pegasus, C-130 and KC-390. Rotorcraft covers the CH-53K King Stallion, V-22 Osprey, UH-60M Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache alongside commercial types such as the H160, AW189 and Bell 525. Space applications include solid rocket booster cases, launch vehicle fairings and payload doors, and satellite bus structures and solar arrays. Shipset values give a sense of the weighting, with the CH-53K worth two and a half to three and a half million dollars of Hexcel content and the F-35 in the half to one million range. From the first quarter of 2025 Hexcel began reporting defense, space and industrial together as one category, which grew about 6 percent over the first half of that year on helicopters, fighters and space programs.
One unit sits apart from the structural business. ARC Technologies, acquired in 2019 and based in Amesbury, Massachusetts, makes radar and microwave absorbing materials, EMI control products, dielectrics, plating and conductive materials, and radomes. That work is about signature management and electromagnetic survivability rather than load-bearing structure, and its customers include Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, RTX and BAE Systems.
The useful way to place Hexcel is as a tier supplier whose materials are designed into a platform a decade before it flies and stay there for the life of the program. It does not build aircraft, missiles or satellites. It qualifies the fibre, resin, core and adhesive systems that the companies which do build them specify, which makes its revenue unusually tied to production rates rather than to contract awards.
