Honeywell Aerospace is the aviation and space arm of Honeywell International, and it organizes its work into three groups: Commercial Aviation, Defense and Space, and Business and General Aviation. The defense side traces back to autopilot and fuel-quantity work Honeywell's Aero division started in Chicago in the 1940s, and it grew through the 1986 purchase of Sperry Aerospace and decades of engine and avionics development since. Today the company says its equipment flies on roughly seven in ten military aircraft worldwide, which gives a sense of how spread out the business really is rather than concentrated in one flagship product. Engines are a core piece of that footprint. Honeywell builds turboshaft and turboprop families including the T55, which powers the CH-47 Chinook, along with the HTS900 and older T53 and LTS101 lines, and it co-developed the F124 and F125 turbofans used on trainer and light attack jets through the ITEC joint venture.
On the ground side, Honeywell has long supplied the AGT-1500 gas turbine engine that drives the M1 Abrams tank, an unusual crossover from aviation into land systems that shows up in almost nothing else the company sells. Auxiliary power units are another anchor: Honeywell has built more than 95,000 APUs since the 1950s, with tens of thousands still flying today, including the 131-9 series known for keeping systems alive during the 2009 US Airways ditching on the Hudson. Avionics is where Honeywell's defense and commercial lines overlap the most. Primus-family glass cockpit suites, synthetic vision and combined vision displays, ground proximity warning, and the IntuVue RDR-7000 weather radar all trace back to the same engineering base whether the customer is an airline or a military transport wing. For satellite communications, the JetWave X terminal delivers Ka-band connectivity built for resilience on government and military airframes, a newer addition as platforms demand more bandwidth for data-heavy missions.
Honeywell also supplies aircraft wheels, brakes, and flight data recorders, unglamorous but essential hardware that keeps its content on a given airframe far higher than any single subsystem would suggest. The Defense and Space piece extends into orbit as well. Honeywell says its hardware is on board roughly nine in ten satellites currently in service and every NASA mission flown, spanning environmental control equipment on the International Space Station to components in astronaut spacesuits. That space work sits alongside the more visible military aircraft business rather than under a separate identity, which is part of why the company can be hard to categorize with a single label. Across all of it, Honeywell's model is less about building whole aircraft and more about being the supplier whose parts show up inside nearly everyone else's, from engines and APUs to cockpits, radar, and satellite links, spanning combat jets, transports, helicopters, business aircraft, and spacecraft alike.
