Hughes Network Systems
Satellite ground systems and tactical terminals for military, government, and commercial networks.
Hughes Network Systems has been building satellite ground equipment since the 1970s, when it operated as Digital Communications Corporation before Hughes Aircraft bought the company in 1987. It invented VSAT technology, the small-dish ground terminal design that made distributed satellite networking commercially practical, and sold its first large VSAT network to Walmart in the 1980s, a deployment that helped define what the technology could do at retail scale. The company spent a stretch as an independent public company after a 2007 spinoff before EchoStar acquired it in 2011 for roughly two billion dollars, and it now operates as a subsidiary within EchoStar's broader satellite and communications portfolio rather than as a standalone public entity. On the consumer and enterprise side, Hughes is best known for HughesNet, its satellite internet service for homes and businesses in areas without cable or fiber, and for HughesON, a set of managed network services including SD-WAN and Wi-Fi aimed at enterprise and government customers who need a single vendor across many remote sites.
That commercial scale matters for the government business, because it funds a technology base that carries over directly into military and defense applications. The company's JUPITER System is its high-throughput satellite ground platform, used both for HughesNet's residential service and for larger government and enterprise networks that need to manage bandwidth across many terminals efficiently. On the tactical side, Hughes has built out an HM Series of software-defined SATCOM modems and terminals, including the HM100 gateway and HM400 modem, designed around an open standards architecture rather than a single proprietary waveform, so they can be adapted across airplanes, uncrewed aircraft, ships, and ground vehicles. The company has demonstrated HM series modems paired with General Atomics' Resource Management System for remotely piloted aircraft, and it built a specific through-the-rotor waveform for its HeloSat solution, letting helicopters maintain satellite links despite the interference their own rotor blades would otherwise cause.
Hughes has also expanded its defense partnerships internationally, working with Airbus Defence and Space on tactical terminals that operate over the Skynet military communications satellite system used by the UK and allied forces, and demonstrating multi-orbit SATCOM for remotely piloted aircraft alongside SES. In the U.S., Hughes holds a Department of Homeland Security tactical satellite communications contract known as TacCom II, supplying transportable, ruggedized terminals for rapid-deployment connectivity. The company is headquartered in Germantown, Maryland, and while EchoStar's stock trades publicly under the ticker SATS, Hughes itself operates as a wholly owned business unit rather than a separately listed company. For military and government buyers, Hughes' pitch is less about a single flagship product and more about depth across ground systems, terminals, and managed services built on decades of VSAT engineering.
