Huta Stalowa Wola S.A.
Polish howitzers, mortars, IFVs, minelayers, gun barrels and buses
Huta Stalowa Wola was built in 1938 as part of the Central Industrial Region, deliberately sited in south-east Poland far from the German and Soviet borders. It made steel and guns, then spent the postwar decades adding heavy construction machinery, and it is now the land systems arm of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa, which holds around 86 percent of the shares. The plant at Stalowa Wola is supported by a second site in the town, a branch at Deblin and the Autosan bus works at Sanok, taken over in 2022. HSW is a manufacturer rather than a holding company, and the catalogue divides cleanly into rocket and artillery equipment, armoured and mechanised vehicles, engineering machines, gun barrels, consortium work and technical services sold to outside customers.
Artillery is the flagship. The 155 mm AHS Krab pairs a South Korean K9 chassis with a British AS-90M Braveheart turret and a Polish 52 calibre barrel, and Poland has committed to more than 248 guns while Ukraine has taken 108 of them, 54 donated and 54 bought under a contract worth about 700 million dollars. Krab batteries deploy as Regina squadron fire modules alongside command, ammunition and repair vehicles. The M120 Rak turreted mortar comes in the wheeled M120K on the Rosomak hull and the tracked M120G, with 124 systems in Polish service by late 2024, and the same turret is offered separately. Rocket artillery covers the WR-40 Langusta and the Langusta II prototype, and HSW still overhauls the 122 mm 2S1 Gozdzik. Supporting vehicles include the ACPV artillery command post in wheeled and tracked forms, the ASV and AASV ammunition carriers, the AARV armament repair vehicle, the WRAE armament and electronics workshop, the ARV reconnaissance vehicle and the Waran 4x4 tactical platform used for command variants developed with Teldat.
The armoured and mechanised line rests on Borsuk, the amphibious infantry fighting vehicle that replaces the Soviet-era BWP-1. Poland signed a framework for 1,000 vehicles plus 400 auxiliary variants in February 2023 and an executive contract for 111 vehicles in March 2025. Borsuk swims on two rotating water jets and carries the ZSSW-30 unmanned turret with a 30 mm Bushmaster cannon and Spike missiles, developed with WB Group, which HSW also markets as the wheeled RCTS 30. Engineering forces get the Baobab-K scattered minelaying vehicle on a Jelcz chassis, ordered in 24 units under a 2023 contract worth around 510 million zloty, along with repair of the older Kroton system and civil machinery including a backhoe loader and a loader dozer. Barrels from 30 mm to 155 mm are made for internal use and for sale. Technical services cover waterjet cutting, robotised and aluminium welding, CNC machining, EDM, finishing, a length and angle measurement laboratory, non-destructive testing and dynamic and shooting trials. Autosan adds coaches, city and school buses and specialist police and prison vehicles. It is an unusual span for one site. The gun barrel shop and the bus works share a gate.
