ICEYE was started in 2014 by Rafal Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila out of Aalto University work on shrinking synthetic aperture radar, betting that a radar imaging satellite could weigh under 100 kilograms rather than several tonnes. It worked. It launched its first spacecraft in 2018 and had more than 60 in orbit by the end of 2025, the largest radar imaging fleet aloft. Radar sees through cloud, smoke and darkness, so a flood at night under a storm system reads as clearly as a parking lot at noon. Around 1,000 people work for the group, with the factory and mission control in Espoo and offices in Warsaw, California and England. ICEYE builds its own satellites and has been raising output sharply, with a Generation 4 design that roughly doubles antenna size and radiated power entering manufacture in 2026.
The SAR data business sells access to that fleet. Customers pick between Spot, Strip and Scan collections depending on whether they want fine detail over a small target or a sweep across tens of thousands of square kilometres, and Dwell holds the beam on one point long enough to watch activity. Orders come through a tasking desk or an automated interface that lets a customer command a pass directly, and Tactical Access reserves capacity retargetable as late as two hours before overflight. Imagery moves by direct downlink or through edge processing when minutes count. ICEYE also supplies data into the European Union Copernicus programme and the European Space Agency Third Party Mission scheme.
A large share of revenue comes from natural catastrophe work sold to insurers, reinsurers, banks, utilities and civil government agencies. Flood Insights produces observed flood extent and depth at building level instead of modelled estimates, Wildfire Insights returns building level damage every 24 hours during an active fire, and the Hurricane Solution pairs a rapid impact heat map with flood depth footprints inside a day of landfall. Munich Re has folded ICEYE flood data into its own location risk platform. Government users buy the same layers for flood, wildfire and deforestation monitoring. Banking and energy customers use them for exposure and asset risk.
Defence and intelligence is the fastest growing side. ICEYE sells imagery and analysis for border watch, site activity, port monitoring, sea ice and oil spill detection, and its Ocean Vision family targets maritime domain awareness, where one radar pass can pick a dark vessel out of open water. It also sells whole satellites. Poland took delivery of the POLSARIS system in May 2026 under a contract for three spacecraft worth around 200 million euros, Portugal launched its first two national satellites in 2026, and Greece, the Netherlands, Sweden and Finland have bought sovereign capability of their own. Ukraine has held an agreement with ICEYE since 2023, extended in January 2026. A joint venture with Rheinmetall, formed in November 2025 and majority held by the German group, won a Bundeswehr reconnaissance contract worth about 1.7 billion euros a month later. IHI is working with ICEYE on a Japanese constellation. Sovereign hardware comes with ground segments, operator training, an ISR Cell where ICEYE analysts work for the customer, and federation tying a national fleet into the constellation. A funding round led by General Atlantic in June 2026 valued the company above 10 billion euros.
