IHI Corporation dates its history back to 1853 and a Tokyo shipyard, and over the century and a half since it has grown into a diversified industrial group organized around a handful of segments, of which Aero Engine, Space and Defense is the one that matters for military purposes. IHI's fighter engine work centers on the XF9-1, a low-bypass afterburning turbofan developed with Japan's Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency as the powerplant demonstrator for what became the Global Combat Air Programme, the joint next-generation fighter effort with the UK and Italy. The XF9-1 was designed deliberately slim and high-thrust so a stealth airframe can carry more internal fuel and weapons without ballooning in size, and IHI has floated the engine as a candidate to power other allied fighter programs as well, including India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.
Beyond fighter propulsion, IHI overhauls and license-produces engines for a range of aircraft flown by Japan's Self-Defense Forces and has decades of experience building engine components for international partners including through risk-and-revenue-sharing programs on commercial jet engines that also touch military derivatives. Its rocket systems business builds solid rocket motors and propulsion components used in Japan's space launch vehicles, including work on the H3 rocket family, and separately produces guided-missile propulsion systems, a role IHI has held since the earliest days of Japan's postwar defense-industrial rebuild, when Tokyo's constitution-driven restrictions on arms exports pushed development inward and rewarded companies that could build propulsion and structures without relying on imported technology. IHI Aerospace, a subsidiary, handles much of this missile and rocket motor production directly, including solid-fuel boosters for surface-to-air and anti-ship systems fielded by Japan's Self-Defense Forces.
Outside the defense-relevant segment, IHI's other businesses span industrial boilers and power generation equipment, bridges and shield tunneling machines, turbochargers, and construction machinery, a spread that reflects the shipbuilding-era metallurgy and precision-machining skills the company built up long before aviation or missile propulsion existed as businesses. IHI trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and, alongside Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, forms the small group of heavy industrial conglomerates that Japan's Ministry of Defense depends on for advanced propulsion and space-adjacent technology it has chosen not to buy from abroad. The XF9 program in particular has drawn outside attention because a domestically developed fighter engine at that thrust class is rare outside the US, Russia, France, and the UK, and IHI's success or failure delivering it will shape how much control Japan retains over its next fighter's core propulsion technology.
