IMBEL - Industria de Material Belico do Brasil

Rifles, pistols, artillery ammunition, propellants and tactical radios.

//Overview

IMBEL is the Brazilian Army's own industrial arm, a state company set up by law in 1975 to bring five long standing military factories under one roof. Its head office sits inside the Army General Headquarters in Brasilia, and it answers to the Ministry of Defence through the Army Command. The factories are older than the company. Powder making at the Estrela site traces back to a royal decree of 1808, Piquete began producing smokeless powder in 1902, and both Itajuba and Juiz de Fora were founded in the 1930s. Around 1,900 people work across the group, and the company also generates hydroelectric power through the Piquete to Itajuba grid, selling the surplus into the national system.

Small arms are the most visible line. The Fabrica de Itajuba builds the IA2 family, which the Army adopted in 2013 and standardised in 2015, covering the 5.56 assault rifle, 5.56 and 7.62 carbines and a 7.62 rifle. It still produces the 7.62 M964A1 MD1 ParaFAL, a folding stock derivative of the FN FAL that generations of Brazilian soldiers carried, along with the .308 AGLC sniper rifle. Pistols in .380, 9mm and .40 run under the GC and TC designations. The same plant makes the IA2 and Amazonia field knives, which the Army buys as part of the soldier kit rather than as cutlery.

The heavy end is chemistry and artillery. Juiz de Fora loads mortar bombs in 60mm, 81mm and 120mm, 90mm gun rounds, and 105mm and 155mm howitzer ammunition, and also produces the SBAT 70 rocket motor with its armour piercing and anti tank warheads. Piquete supplies nitrocellulose, TNT, nitroglycerine, single base and double base propellants and plastic explosive, while the Estrela plant at Mage is the only RDX producer in Latin America and also makes black powder, boosters, detonating cord, fuzes and commercial explosives.

Two further lines sit outside weapons. The communications and electronics factory in Rio de Janeiro builds the Mallet family of software defined tactical radios in manpack and vehicle forms, the TPP-1410 personal transceiver, a multiband set, battery and charger systems and the Genesis fire direction and coordination system, and it supplies the command and control equipment for the Army's Combatente Brasileiro soldier modernisation project. Piquete also produces high performance modular field shelters and humanitarian tents. Finally, IMBEL acts as technical intervener on government to government defence exports by other Brazilian firms, monitoring contract delivery, deadlines and quality on behalf of the state, a role created under Brazil's 2018 defence export policy. IMBEL sells first to the armed forces and to federal and state public security bodies, and within the limits Brazilian law sets it also supplies private companies and individual buyers. The spread of sites is unusual for a company of this size, and it is deliberate. Explosive chemistry, propellant manufacture, ammunition loading, small arms machining and electronics assembly each demand different plant, hazard zoning and skills, and Brazil chose to keep all five capabilities inside one state company rather than let any of them lapse.
